Escape the summer heat at one of Cairns' best known landmarks, the Esplanade Lagoon. Set on the Cairns foreshore overlooking Trinity Inlet, the 4800 sq metre saltwater swimming lagoon offers locals and tourists a year round safe swimming location. Saltwater is pumped from the inlet and filtered through a state of the art filtration and chlorination system, to meet Australian Standards. The kids can enjoy the sandy edges, build sand castles and play in shallow water. On the other side of the Lagoon, visitors can lounge on the timber decks in moderate shade. Shady trees, landscaped gardens and open spaces all contribute to the leisurely atmosphere on the Esplanade The Lagoon is open 6am-9pm Thursday - Tuesday, Midday-9pm Wednesday all year round.

The lagoon has recently just reopened after being closed for a couple of weeks for renovations. It looks fantastic and I’m keen to give the free aqua Zumba a go on Wednesday.

Excellent place to spend a few hours with kids building sand castles. Good hygiene and satisfactory facilities. Kids keep asking why no fee was incurred in this lagoon!(except for hiring a locker) my recommendation in Cairns

This facility re-opened while we were in Cairns. It is good for all ages and is free. The showers were a bit messy by the end of the afternoon.

The Cairns Lagoon is an amazing place to spend an hour, half a day, or an entire day. What an amazing effort from The Cairns Council. A lesson to be learned from southern cousins...
