- Kriddie89Melbourne, Australia201 contributionsEnjoyed our visit!Could pass up a visit to the aquarium on our Cairns holiday. Great central location not far from our accommodation in Cairns city. We are from Melbourne so by comparison, Cairns aquarium is a lot more spacious and didn't feel as overwhelmingly busy even though it was popular. Some great exhibits and set ups for the sea life and other animals. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and would recommend.Thank you for this lovely review! We had the most amazing, awesome experience watching the fish feeding (including sharks) inside the 360-degree Oceanarium. Other attractions that we also love are the10-meter Deep Reef Tank, 20-meter underwater tunnel, mangrove boardwalk, and Australia’s largest freshwater exhibit and more…Hi there! We are so happy that you had a fintastic time. Plenty of presentation for the underwater plants and creatures from the ocean, particularly those of the Great Barrier Reef next to Cairns. The feeding periods were a hit.Hi There! My favourite display was the marine tunnel. I sat there for about half an hour watching sea life swim beside me and overhead. - FlyingLycheeBournemouth, United Kingdom22 contributionsVery good but too fastRecommend to pay premium for the tour guide we had but we would have liked more time between each tank before moving on, especially the big tanks. They were amazing but we could have sat there for 10-15 mins to ourselves admiring it all. It would be good if they allowed free re-entry the next day - even for a few hours.Hi there! We’re super happy you enjoyed the guided tour aspect of your visit. 😄🐠 On these tours it can often feel like you’re moving quickly; however it’s often as you said, because each display is so beautiful, it’s easy to want to sit and watch the displays for a period of time. There’s 72 exhibits and 16000 animals to meet, so a lot to highlight on these tours 😄🐠. As much as we would love to increase the tour timings, the guided tours have specific timings to ensure that guests have enough time in each area to enjoy the wildlife and displays; at a pace suitable to a wide diversity of guests on the tour 😊. We have finish timings to account for guests that may be booked as part of the tour and dinner package so that they arrive at the restaurant on time after the tour. Then we also take into account, any tours that follow, staff break times in between tours and the displays having certain timings on their lights. Which overtime has led us to the current tour lengths we have available 😄🦈🐠. The tour length will depend on which tour you booked. If you booked the Aquarium By Twilight tour, this tour is a little bit longer and operates for approximately 2 hours. If you booked the Night At The Aquarium, this tour operates for approx 1.5hours, which is slightly shorter than the aquarium by twilight; mainly due to lighting changes; as many of our animals have to go to sleep. 🐠🦈🐢🦀 Thank you for taking the time to providing this review; and we’re really happy to hear you enjoyed the aquarium so much you wanted to stay longer! This feedback is very much appreciated, and we’ll be sure to pass on this suggestion to our reservations and sales team! 😄🦈🐠 Have a fish-tastic day!Written 18 December 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 17 December 2023

- Kenan BClinton Township, Michigan25 contributionsCairns Aquarium is a must see place when in CairnsThis must be the 2nd best to actually diving into coral reefs but even then it would not be possible to see the number of species that you can see up close in this perfectly designed Aquarium. We spent more than 3 hours including the Turtle Rehabilitation Center and we could have spent the rest of the day just watching these amazing coral views and sea creatures. It should be on everyone’s list while visiting Cairns. We originally purchased Great Barrier Reef tour but when we learned about the Cairns Aquarium and reading the reviews (also the weather conditions were not clear), we cancelled the snorkeling tour and purchased the entry tickets to Cairns Aquarium. I am glad we did that, I wouldn’t want to miss this place. Also credits to everyone working there and volunteering at the Turtle Rehabilitation Center, they are amazing people. Thank you all.Thank you for this incredible review! Wow we’re so happy you enjoyed your experience and will be sure to pass on this lovely feedback to our team. I gave the tour 5* purely based on the tour guide we had, Daniel. He was super informative, engaging and clearly knew what he was talking about. We took our daughters 3yrs (just had her birthday) and 4.5yrs old. They both loved it!
We paid for the appetiser and drink option only and were happy we didn’t pay for a main meal as weren’t impressed by the food served. Highly recommend as it was a great experience overall.

We are both delighted that we decided to participate in this amazing experience.
Guided by the warm, friendly and incredibly knowledgeable Christine, we spent our time behind the scenes witnessing just some of the amazing work that goes on.
One highlight was Turtle hospital. We were delighted to see all three current patients well on their way to a full recovery, thanks to the dedication and passion of these amazing staff members.
We were assisted by the lovely Jenny when we fed the sting rays. An indescribable experience and I now think sting rays are simply gorgeous. Jenny was also an incredible source of knowledge. Maya also deserves a special mention - she showed us a big dish of sea monkeys before she fed them to the jellyfish that they’re breeding. Fascinating .
We even got to witness Jenny and Maya scuba diving into the huge tanks to feed everyone. 🐠
Lunch by the huge fish tank was a lovely ending to our adventure.
Thank you to the wonderful staff at Cairns Aquarium.

Great reviews from TA Reviewers took us through the doors.
No OAP discount on the tickets. Lots of different fishes etc to see in a very tourist friendly enviroment.
The first Reef Fish Feed of the morning was spoilt for us by a not very good female presenter who finished every sentence with the "OK" and went into far toooooo much detail about the firmation of coral reefs. Us oldies know most of it and the kids were not interested.....we all wanted to see the fish bring fed.
The second Shark/Rays Fish Feed was much better. Light, full of interesting facts and he did not drone on for 15/20 minutes about trivia.
Enjoyed it all, except the lady presenters drone.

I wasn't going to share my opinions, bit you keep emailing me asking to leave a review so here we are.
We went on the twilight evening tour, the aquarium is gorgeous beautifully set out and lots to see. We ended up wandering ahead of the group away from the guide and it made it much more enjoyable for us.
She was a nice girl, but a little more education could be provided, to stop the misinformation.
A guest shouldn't have to he the one to explain how crocodiles grow in size ( by available food, not by age) and to have her tell the guests how incredible deadly FRESHWATER Crocs are. Salties yes, Freshies no.
The one thing that bothered me was the Blue Tangs ( or "Dory fish" as she consistently referred to them as) Their populations are being decimated in the wild for pets and displays. They don't breed well in captivity. I asked about it, and she got someone offended and put on a sad face and little girl voice "well we have a lot of them, and I hope they haven't come from the wild"
Your guides need to be able to answer questions like that. Not everyone is blissfully unaware of how animals get on display

If you go to Cairns I definetly recommend you visit the aquarium, it's a perfect rainy day attraction. We went on a wednesday and it was realtivley busy but not crowded. Apparently the restaurant in the aquarium is great however we didn't eat there. They have alot of information on the animals and also a petting tank, the guy who was at the petting tank was very nice and told us about shark eggs which was very interesting, also we petted a starfish. All in all it was a very enjoyable experience would probably visit again.

We took the Dining with the Sharks experience. Horrible. Please put your money to better utilisation. We paid 300 AUD for two people and it was not even worth 50 aud.

Hello! Uh oh, we’re surprised to hear you didn’t enjoy this experience given the vast majority of our visitors love this exclusive package. As it’s the only opportunity for guests to dine inside the aquarium!
We’d like to investigate further and follow up on your experience to find out more information as to why you didn’t enjoy your experience. If you could email us some more details such as when your visit was, and what parts of the experience specifically you didn’t enjoy that would be very helpful. Thank you 😊

Break your visits to the Reef and the Daintree Rainforest with several hours at this new and very well laid out aquarium. Lectures almost every half hour complement the viewing, and children as well as adults get involved in the Q&A periods that follow. The tunnel with fish swimming over and around you is a visual and photographic treat. The aquarium is growing as new fishlife are added. Supplement the visit with lunch or a snack on the attractive terrace of the attached cafe restaurant.

Chose to visit the cairns aquarium and have a date night on our second night in cairns. Wonderful choice.
The tour by twilight was very informative and helped us recognise fish and other animals we would see all throughout our stay in the area. I learnt so many fun facts about animals and further relay them to the rest of the family. The lady who ran our tour was very enthusiastic about her job, it was quite contagious.
The dine with the sharks, which is held in the oceanarium was lovely, the buffet style dinner which was catered had a wide variety of delicious foods. I didn’t want to stop eating.
During the dinner, our tour lady came and let us know some fun facts about the rays, sharks and other marine life swimming around us while we ate.

As someone who has lived and worked in Far North Queensland their whole life, I found the Aquarium to be very educational. The building is designed incredibly well. Your visit starts out with fresh water species and transitions to salt water as you journey through. The information and species on display depict all the different stages of our ecosystem and are visually stunning. Along the way there are many things to read, tunnels to climb through and life sized statues to admire. Visiting here would be a rewarding experience for families, school groups or anyone who is interested in the environment. Of course, a huge thank you to the staff as well, their friendly disposition made our experience all the more enjoyable from check in until we departed.

Our Great Barrier Reef Tour was cancelled due to cyclone weather and so we hit the Cairns Aquarium instead. We loved our half day visit. We loved the variety of fish and other marine animals they had there. The staff was very knowledgeable and we enjoyed the two presentations we experienced. Even though we were disappointed with not going out to the reef itself, this was the very next best thing! I would highly recommend this venue if the open ocean is not for you, or don’t feel up to that kind of excursion. Well worth the money!

Yes you can, any problems then see the ticket staff. We found them extremely helpful and accommodating. The objective is to go through in a circular route but they told us to go in the backway through the shop (ie the reverse way) as it was feed time for the sharks and rays. The sharks are located at the end of the tour so we would have missed the divers if we'd followed the normal pathway. Wasn't that nice of them.

Good afternoon. Im looking forward to bringing my family to your aquarium while we're on holiday in Cairns from Melbourne, but I've been seeing news stories down here about the high amount of aquatic deaths in your aquarium. Can you please tell me, are the articles I've read about the deaths of the Maori Rasse, Potato Cods, Leopold shark, countless tropical fish, rare lizards, pythons and of course Australias first captive Hammerhead sharks true or are they all still there alive and well?
I just don't want the kids to be disappointed or have to explain about "fish heaven" let alone justify to the wife how an institute that claims to support the preservation of the reef and marine life can kill over $350,000 worth of fish and reptiles in less than 4 months.
Thank you very much.
Concerned Aquadad.
Written 9 December 2017
Thanks for your replies everyone. I really appreciate your time and help but unfortunately SOME of the reports I'd heard turned out to be correct. I was hopeful but quietly pessimistic when we arrived in Cairns and entered the aquarium. The maori wrasse, leopard shark and both hammerheads were nowhere to be seen so I covertly quizzed a couple of the staff. They ALL told me they were "out the back" but one boy was slightly less convincing and not completely equipped for my concerned aquadad "interrogation" techniques and broke under pressure. I felt like the environmental FBI!
Turns out the maori wrasse died about 2 weeks ago, 1 Hammerhead died around 3 weeks ago and 1 a week ago. The leopard shark could possibly still be alive "out the back" but he didn't seem hopeful.
I've got to hand it to the young staff, they all fed me the same and obviously prepared line handed down to them from above to not alarm the public to the worrisome state of affairs at their aquarium... with the exception of the poor kid I grilled who I actually feel a bit sorry for. He seemed genuinely distressed by being forced to lie.
All in all it was a good day at the Cairns aquarium and the lil demons (my kids) absolutely loved it! But for us adults who care about what's going on behind the scenes and the environment it was more than a little disheartening.
