The Sydney Central Business District is abuzz with energy. Power brokers run to and from high rise buildings and after-work drink places, high-end shoppers tour venues like the QVB, and fine diners frequent the many celebrity chef restaurants. For a dose of culture, walk to the NSW Art Gallery, or visit the Sydney Museum. To escape the hustle and bustle, reconnect with nature at the Sydney Botanical Gardens or picnic lunch at High Park. No matter your interest, be sure to check the full calendar of events hosted by the city, from the Sydney Festival in January to October’s Good Food Month at Hyde Park.

    Gorgeous Theatre
The theatre is stunning, beautiful interior that is well worth arriving early to take it all in. We were in the back couple of rows in the the stalls and had a perfect view, sadly the musical was not to my liking but the seats were comfy. Would be happy to see more shows here.

    Nice old theatre
I saw the Elvis musical, good. The theatre has beautiful, ornate scroll work, etc, everywhere in the interior. Gorgeous staircase, perfect for.sashaying diwn. Oldest still-operating theatre in world (apparently). There are tours (I think weekly). The place looks really old-fashioned and sort of sadly dark and neglected (must be hard to dust all the scroll-work). I'm into totally modern decorating so don't go by me....

Elvis was in the building !!
We saw Elvis the Musical and thoroughly enjoyed the show. Great music, great dancing. The theater was amazing, brought back great memories of early days as a child going into the theaterette beside the main theater which ran a continuous newsreel of Movietone News. The only knock was the seating - it was very tight to get in and out of the row. A bit embarrassing for large people to maneuver. You can't flip the seats up to make it easy for people to pass you. No leg room for tall people , but it was just for a few hours luckily.

Last night my cousin and I saw Nick Cave.
Moo flew all the way from QLD to see him.
He was amazing. Sadly, our night was ruined by a verbally and physically aggressive man sitting behind us.
He was screaming out insanely rude comments towards Nick one was "you should cum all over the seats"... and when a woman asked him to be quiet, he called her a c@#$T.
Then proceeded to intimidate her husband and said he would "rip him to shreds"
The agressor than started whispering, "turn around I dare you" about 5 times.
The aggressor's mates sat there and did nothing to stop him. Moo and I were sitting between this all and felt very unsafe.
The balcony man then stood up, walked down to their row, and glared down at the poor couple before he walked off to get a drink.
At this point I tried to look for a security guard or an usher, but none were in the theatre. I had to walk all the way out to the bar where the man stood to get help.
After finally getting the attention of security and the manager - they said they talked to him and he said he was "defending himself" and they weren't willing to talk to the couple because the gig was still going...
The manager said sorry its "your word against his"...
We managed to get seated everywhere. But in all my years of giging have I ever been treated so badly. I tried to do the right thing to keep people safe and I wasn't believed...

The State Theatre Manager was almost rude to me when I asked him why this man wasn't being removed. He should be ashamed of the way he dealt with this. People still had to sit near him uncomfortably for the rest of the night. And another aggressive male gets off scot-free...
I no longer feel safe going to your venue.

The building alone is worth a look and even better when you visit to watch a show. I came here to watch the Elvis musical and it was an excellent venue for a show

I highly recommend this 1.5-2 hour guided small group tour of the State Theatre. Built in 1929 as a picture theatre, these days mostly for live performances. A mix of art deco and regal, there is so much history within the walls. Is wonderful to explore all levels, stage and back stage. Have stairs to negotiate.

A beautiful theater right in the heart of Sydney. No seat is a bad seat & the acoustics are perfect!

I’ve a few bands there over the years and can’t fault the place.

The architecture is spectacular & I’d recommend anyone who hasn’t been gets there 30-45 minutes before your performance just to look around!

As a theatre the State Theatre is stunning. It is a feast for your eyes. However, if you are not lucky enough to buy a seat in the lower area and have to go to the Dress Circle you are in BIG trouble. The stairs leading up to the first level are bad enough and the only banister is on the left of the stairs. Once they have been conquered you then have another 8-10 stairs to get to the seating area. THEN if you are at the front of the Dress circle there are steep steps you have to descend to arrive at your seat. I understand the theatre is 94 years old but Ye Gods the seats are so small. I am not a large person at all but let's just say by the end of the show I was very friendly with the lady I sat next to. Please spend some money to install a lift. Patrons would not mind climbing these final few steps up to their seats if this was the case. It must be possible even Hampton Court in England has a lift.

Gorgeous theatre. It’s big enough, but not that big that if you’ve got the seats right at the back you can’t say anything. So we were right up the back and we could see Sarah Milliken last night. The theatre is absolutely amazing in its design and decorations. Chandeliers are stunning. The seats are fairly small and not much room, but it wasn’t too bad. And even though there was a short lineup. We got in so quickly it was unbelievable. It’s a good theatre with lots of parking nearby, which is handy.
