About
Entry to the castle grounds is free of charge. The Castle has stood proudly on the banks of the River Trent for nearly 900 years. History of the Castle includes the death of King John, Knights Templar and as well as the English Civil War, War of the Roses, Anarchy Wars and Baronnial Wars. Guided tours of the Castle are conducted normally on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Surfaced pathways in the castle and gardens allow suitable access for wheelchairs. During the visit, relax in the quiet garden areas and admire the picturesque views. Entertainment often occurs seasonally, with a bandstand for concerts available, and makes for a great day out. Newark Castle and Gardens offer nearby parking, so it is easily accessible by car. It is also close to historic market places; Southwell market and Newark market, so why not visit the pretty market towns too.

In ruins
Oct 2021
This was originally built in the early 12th century and rebuilt in stone at the end of the 12th century. It was then dismantled in 17th century after the civil war. King John died here in 1216. Complete ruins now, with no access to any part of the building. Very nice gate house remains.

A great place to visit and sit on a nice day. Next to River Trent, lots of boats around. A very nice park opposite. 2 massive car parks. Really nice place.

GREAT CASTLE TO EXPLORE
Aug 2021
A fabulous castle that stands so proud on the edge of The River Trent. It’s certainly been well looked after over the years, and is well worth visiting and exploring all the nooks and crannies within.

Worth a visit
Aug 2021
Whilst staying at Warners, Thoresby Hall Hotel we visited Newark and this is a very nice town - and the castle which overlooks the lovely River Trent is interesting. Have a look at the locks while you are.

A nice castle ruin by the River Trent.

A partially restored castle that dates back to the 12th Century. Left derelict in 1648 it was restored between 1845 and 1848 by architect Anthony Salvin. Then in 1889 the corporation of Newark purchased the castle and carried out further restoration work. It's a Grade I listed building and is an interesting piece of English history and is a pleasing sight as you cross the bridge(s) over the Trent. The gardens are also pleasant. Not on the same level by far as the likes of Warwick and Windsor castles but a castle none the less and worth a visit if in the vicinity. I have visited a couple of times now, first in May 2019 and most recently June 2021.

A beautiful Location
May 2021
Great piece of history in the middle of a great market town. Very well maintained right beside the river Trent with some great walks around the area and plenty of shops and pubs for something to eat and drink. A great location for a great day out.
