- Antonio PNaples, Italy114 contributionsMysticalA truly mystical experience we went on August 15th feast day of Our Lady of the Assumption who is the patron saint of the island of Lefkada so we witnessed a solemn ceremony with the Greek Orthodox rite. A monastery really very well maintained on a hill overlooking the sea, a particularity in addition to the convent there is also a small zoo. there is a very large parking lot and we were sorry not to know better and deepen this visit because as I repeat was in progress a religious ceremony. if you are in Lefkada you can not miss a visit. The convent is called Faneromoni which means “she who appeared” because it is said that when the painting of the Madonna was ordered the priest who had been commissioned to paint it going to start the work I find the picture already completed and it was never understood who had done it so there was shouted at the miracleVisited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 August 2024
- Glenn M63 contributionsVery nice monastery!A very nice monastery where the fathers in black clothing are still fully active. Very friendly welcome. You can walk around everywhere and even have a whole museum. Definitely worth it. In the garden they also have some Bambis and birds.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 24 August 2024
- Paulien SpeksnijderNieuwegein, The Netherlands10 contributionsBeautiful and well maintainedBeautiful, well maintained monastery that is still in operation. Small museum with old pieces and a petting zoo, this was more past glory. Also nice view over Lefkada town and the lagoon.Visited September 2024Travelled with familyWritten 5 September 2024
- DonnoulaAlexandroupoli, Greece57 contributionsSuddenly, Our Lady pulled us there. We were turning from the west side of the island towards our accommodation and my husband while the GPS pointed straight suddenly without knowing anything turned left because he said he was confused. And after a few meters we found ourselves in front of the monastery. I've never seen more beautiful and well-kept. I went crazy with the room that had sofas with handmade blankets. Great church with very friendly people. I felt like Our Lady pulled us. I highly recommend it.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 September 2024
- David OGeneva, Switzerland5,094 contributionsAll right. It is a beautiful monastery located on the heights of the city of Lefkada. Inside there is a very beautiful garden and also a very beautiful chapel. A very photogenic place. The interior of the chapel remains a very serene place. Nice place. A monastery open in the morning and at the end of the day. Outside there is a beautiful garden with a beautiful view of the Lefkada plain. However, further down the road there is the zoo. Well, this is a small animal zoo. For those who do not like this kind of mini zoo, one can remove one or even two stars. But hey, they're small animals. Apart from the deer, the poor guy, they should let him go to the mountains. Otherwise, it is a beautiful place in peace and serenity.Visited July 2024Travelled soloWritten 19 September 2024
- The Button.Rotterdam, The Netherlands610 contributionsMonastery visit on a Sunday. Also on vacation, soaking up local culture is good for the balance of your vacation. So one Sunday I joined this beautiful monastery. Coincidentally, a "Communion" was also underway at that time. Moved us neatly in between. The Klosster complex looks really nice. Still inhabited by a number of monks. Nice buildings. Beautiful landscaped garden. Is also outside this complex a kind of small petting zoo. But back inside the monastery complex, all looks impressive. Just take a moment in church, to relax on a pew. And absorb all the rituals and customs. And make sure you wear appropriate clothing. Respect the Greek Orthodox customs.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 October 2024

We stumbled across this monastery on our way to the airport and so glad we did. The kids loved the small zoo and gardens and the views were fantastic. Sadly we were there when the monastery itself closes between 2 and 4 so only saw the buildings and courtyard from outside but even that was beautiful and peaceful. Will def return another time to visit the monastery properly. There are donation boxes all round the zoo for people to donate to help the monastery look after the animals.

Really enjoyed the visit to this monastery with small zoo.
Entry and parking is free, but you can (and should) donate some money for the upkeep and provision of toilet facilities.
There isn't much in terms of sightseeing on the island, so this was one of the highlights.
My only issue is with the mini-zoo as I felt the cages were small, but I'm not not generally a fan.

We visited the monastery on our way back to Lefkada City.
It is a very tranquil place, sweltering in the hot sun (we had 40 degrees).
I am not sure what people mean by the little zoo. We must have missed that (but maybe for the better).
There was a church which was really nice and a little souvenir shop where the nuns and monks (?) sell their self made honey, some iconic pictures and other things.
Be aware that you a) should be dressed appropriately and b) cannot enter the monastery between 2 and 4 pm as it is closed then.

There was a lot of noise from tradesmen who had to work on site virtually everywhere, and tradesmen can make noise. It should have been announced that the monastery was closed. When we got to the place there was a nun who was very hysterical about clothing. One of the participants was wearing shorts that reached the middle of the knee, but they were missing about 2 cm in length so there was no access. Another was wearing mini shorts and could easily enter.
The participant could then take some more or less dirty cover dress which really seemed to have seen better days.
We looked after the animals and if it was reasonable animal husbandry according to current rules and guidelines, I simply say, what a shame it is for the animals. In my opinion, there should be no animal husbandry in this place.
I cannot recommend this place and cannot understand that up to 2 hours can be spent here.

Kids enjoyed the stray cats. Zoo is a waste of time with animals you can see anywhere. If you like churchy stuff you will probably like the church. Free Turkish delight was the highlight.

Free entry but donation boxes spread around. Very peaceful and nice to quietly enjoy the views. Ladies must use one of the robes provided upon entry. It is a lovely place but not sure why they have the animals there, especially the deers outside in the blazing sun, we didn't like seeing that and not much room for them to move around.

At only 3 km from Lefkada on a grassy hill is the Holy Monastery of the Virgin Faneromeni for centuries represents the religious center of the island as the oldest and biggest monastery. The monastery is dedicated to the Dormition (Assumption), which is also the patron of the island and is celebrated on the island. According to tradition, in this place there was once a temple of goddess Artemis. When the Apostle Paul went through Nikopoli neighboring Prevezα sent to the island of his three students, Akilas, Sosion and Herodion. Last (Herodion) are kneeling praying with faith in God and the figure of the goddess Artemis, fell and broke into pieces. At this spot, Christians built a small temple dedicated to the Virgin Mary. After that, the Apostle Paul ordained Sosion for first bishop of Lefkada.

Nice view, but no better than stopping on the roadside. Cannot endorse this place due to the terrible conditions the animals are kept in. One dead parrot and a bunch of dehydrated deer do not make a zoo. Bus-loads of tourists are hardly compatible with the traditional serenity of a monastery... one might even go so far as to accuse them of chasing the euro over enlightenment of the soul.

A beautiful place. An active monastery with Greek Orthodox monks on site. Attractive church open to visits. The various buildings are well maintained.
We saw the animals being fed in the zoo. And we played with several little frisky kittens.
A majestic view from its great height over the land and sea beyond.
Well worth a visit.

Afgelopen mei bezocht ik het prachtige klooster. Op de muur/ achterzijde vh klooster ( kant van het uitzicht naar zee) staat een symbool in de muur met twee spiraalvormen . Ik zou graag de betekenis daarvan willen weten ?
