We started via the Agia Marina route, which is the easier of the two. It’s still quite tough and very much requires a solid effort, even the fittest of people will be sweating and out of breath when they get to the top.
The views at the top are magnificent. Uninterrupted 360 degree vista across Naxos.
I would encourage anyone visiting Naxos to give this a go. The village of Filoti at the bottom is a great spot to grab an iced coffee and lunch afterwards.

Great hike to the highest point in the Cyclades. I took the easier route starting from the Agia Marina chapel (not much parking available) which took an hour to get to the top The trail is well marked except for the last section to the summit where you need to look at for the stone piles indicating the way to go. I would recommend walking boots even if most people are in trainers as there are many opportunities for sprained ankles ! Leave early - I stared at 7.15am and by the time I was coming down an hour later the heat was picking up (most of the trail is exposed). Take plenty of water and sun cream if walking in summer.

We went there on our last full day on Naxos, a pretty windy day. Totally worth doing when loving a good hike; the view on top is breathtaking. (This was my first hike to a mountain top, so my standards might be lower than those of people who hike regularly.)
Since it's 1004m, it could get chilly the higher you get. Maybe bring a jacket. And since it's up a mountain, there are only few places affording shade. I recommend bringing at least 2l of water p.p. - and don’t forget sunscreen.
Round trip recommended - you will also see the cave where Zeus is said to be born and raised. The ascent there could be a little tricky, but doable.

One of the reviews mentioned they took their very young kids on this hike and that it was easy. I think you probably were referring to a different hike!
I started the hike at Agia Marina which is the shorter, "easier" trek. This hike cannot be classified as easy. It won't be the hardest hike ever but it is harder than moderate I would say. You really need hiking shoes for this. I wore tennis shoes which did the job but were far from adequate as there is a lot of rock and boulder climbing on especially the last 20-30 minutes. It gets quite steep as well.
It took me about 1 hour & 10 minutes going up.
Going down, I got lost because I was following another hiker but didn't realize he was going down the harder, longer path until I got a bit disoriented. After having a bit of panic, I looked on Google Maps and figured out I had to climb back up partially to find the correct path. Definitely keep on eye on yourself going down because as others have said, it is a bit tricky and you can get confused. Yes there are cairns (piles of stones) to guide you on the path but you can still get lost because there are cairns on both the shorter & longer paths. Use Google Maps if you can.
The view at the top is so rewarding. You can see Mykonos, Ios, Paros, and even Santorini amongst other smaller islands. I brought (4) .5 liter bottles of water which was just enough. Don't even think about bringing less than 1 liter of water. This is a difficult hike and it gets hot. I started at 9:45am. The heat wasn't unbearable but you're in the sun the entire time. There was a nice breeze.
We had 4 nights/3 full days on Naxos which was perfect. We spent one day exploring the villages and I thought this hike could be done on that day. I was wrong as you'll make a lot of stops on your villages tour and won't have time or energy for the hike. I ended up doing the hike on the 2nd day and the 3rd day was a beach and relaxation day although we went to the beach all 3 days.
This was one of the highlights of Naxos and should not be missed!

Unless you have the right gear and a very good level of fitness this is not easy! Its a rock hopping mountain goat trail marked by red paint on rocks! That said we were up for the challenge and got to within 100m of the summit in about and hour - giving us 270 degree view of the island and surrounds! Tough but at the same time rewarding. Route down nears lots of care. Easier going up.

Fabulous views from the top and on the way. It is not so much of a walk rather a hike with some climbing at times. We did the ‘easier’ route starting from the church as we had our children with us, 10 and 12. We started at 7am and did not regret getting up early to avoid the heat. It took 1hr 25 minutes to go up and about an hour to descend. We took breakfast up and ate with a view over the Cyclades! Highly recommended. We saw people wearing flip flops, which could be very dangerous. Even in trainers there were times when our feet were slipping on the stones.

Lovely hike to do. Moderately difficult as there will be some places where you gave to scramble up but most should be able for this.
We parked at the Fontaine d'Aria. There was just a short line of cars and we had no trouble finding space but if it was in the busy season this could be more problematic. You can start from Filoti but it will add a lot of time to your hike. From the Fontaine, you head up steeply for about 20-30 mins and you reach Zeus' cave. Then it's another hour and 20 minutes to the top. It took us 3 hours 45 mins all told.
Definitely start early to avoid the worst of the heat, and definitely bring water. Also, watch out for the prickly bushes. The thorns are unforgiving!

Make sure you have sensible shoes and plenty of water! It's definitely not a walk, hike or trek it's a climb! We got a taxi from Naxos town to agias marina because the early bus stops running in September, the climb starts here. There are two different routes the agias marina route and the more widely advertised filoti route (baffled why this is the main suggested route). The agias marina route is a steady climb starting with steps and then a very rocky terrain towards the top. We set off at about 10am and it didn't feel too hot. It took us about an hour to get the the top. The views were absolutely breathtaking. We went down the filoti route and this is A LOT steeper, you are literally climbing down rocks, we were so glad we did not go up this way. We passed quite a few people going up and most were struggling. It was quite the adventure but took us about 2 hours to get down. We then walked into filoti and had a lovely lunch at platanos before getting the bus back to Naxos town. All in all a fabulous day!

We hiked up Mount Zas as a family of 4 - our children are 12 and 10. We’ve all got a good level of fitness but had read mixed reviews on how hard it was. We didn’t have a car so we got a bus and the driver stopped after Filoti so we could walk to the Agia Marina start. I am glad we did this as it knocked a good hour off the hike up and made it much more enjoyable. We did 5 miles in 3 hours- we walked back to Filoti to catch the bus back. The path is challenging in places especially near the top. I’m not keen on heights so was quite nervous at the peak but we got our photos and then descended. Good footwear is a must! We did it in trainers which were fine. But definitely not flip flops! As others have said spectacular views and it was really nice to say we had hiked it whilst on the islands.

Zeus, the Godfather of Greek mythology, chose a picturesque, yet difficult to get to location when hiding from the Titans on Naxos. While it is not a particularly challenging hike in terms of technical ability, it does take some stamina and grit to make it to the very top. Especially the way uphill was rather steep and not ideally signed, so at times along the way did we get a little frustrated, but eventually we reached the top (in 1-1,5h) and it was surely worth it. The way downhill was walk in the park compared to up, but don't get intimidated too early. You can park right next to the ascend of the hike, while it may surely get crowded once the pandemic is over and people will be starting to travel again.

Where is each trail and it's relative difficulty?
Written 14 August 2018
It's not super easy to find right away but definitely take a car or quad bike to go there. We didn't do a full hiking trail but started at the bottom of the mountain trail which is shortly after Danakos. If you like a longer hike check naxostrek . com
I recommend hiking shoes suitable for rocks or thick sole sport shoes. The trail can be challenging in the end for people lacking strong lower body strength.
