About
Obsidian wines are the true embodiment of their place of origin. Every exquisite glass of Obsidian speaks of this unique terroir, encapsulating not only the character of the weathered soils at Onetangi, home to Obsidian's vineyard on Waiheke Island, but the coastal beauty of the surrounding environment. Tucked away in an amphitheater setting amongst the vines, Obsidian offers wine tastings in a relaxed and friendly environment. Our knowledgeable cellar door staff will take you through a range of Obsidian Reserve & Non-Reserve wines. All are available to purchase in the shop. We're currently just operating on Saturday's and Sunday's 11am to 5pm however please check Google, or our website for the most up to date information on our opening hours. Thank you.

Loved the wines and the tastings and setting is brilliant. Staff were helpful and informative.
Sadly we found the same wines we bought at the vineyard selling for $10 less per bottle at the local wine store.

Although Waiheke is a small island, there is only so much you can do in one day, so it pays to work out your itinerary in advance. We enjoyed Obsidian Vineyard, the whites were especially good. You can get a fine view over the vineyard while you enjoy your wine. By the way, obsidian is a form of black volcanic glass which was prized for its sharpness.

My husband and I were just visiting Waiheke for the day. It was super busy full of tourists and so we decided to catch a taxi to get away from the busyness and come to Obsidian which is tucked away off the beaten track.
The day we were here was one filled with parties on wine tours BUT we found a table and had an amazing experience. Our ‘hostess’ was a lovely lady who was very knowledgeable. We were offered a wine menu and could select 3 of the Estate Wines and one Reserve which was chosen for the day. The experience was not rushed which we liked. $15 per person which I thought was good. If you purchase wine the tasting is free. The wine was stunning ; how could we not buy any! We chose a variety of beautiful wines and had them shipped to us in Christchurch. They arrived promptly.
Being a cellar door winery only you will not find food here. However don’t this discourage you from a visit. if you find yourself becoming a little peckish there is pleasant short walk past the vines that takes you to another winery that has a restaurant that serves tapas food.
Well done Obsidian for getting through the busy Saturday with just 2 staff and lots of tour groups You pulled it off admirably. We had a relaxed time.

Thank you so much for the lovely review. We're sorry to hear there was only two of us on a Saturday, that's highly unusual! However our staff are industry professionals and we're pleased you got to experience both their knowledge and our relaxed atmosphere even if it was a little busy. Hope your wine has arrived safe and sound in Christchurch and we look forward to having you back next time.

Rocked up and the setting was promising. Set within a natural amphitheatre surrounded by vines it was a relaxed, simple setting.
The staff member was exquisite and knew her stuff well and truly, but we didn’t enjoy any of the wines that were poured for us and left without having our 4th tasting.
Unfortunately it was very busy and she was there on her own, so it was a long time between pours.
No food available this is simply a vineyard with tastings and wine to purchase.

A lovely tasting in a lovely venue overlooking the vineyards. We visited several wineries in Waiheke and most were excellent, but we thought the wines we tasted here were all of a very high standard and probably the best value for money we encountered on the island. The Pinot Gris in particular stood out. The hostesses were delightful.

We're so pleased to hear you enjoyed your day on the island and that we managed to stand out of the crowd. Our Pinot Gris was admittedly the star of the summer, you'll have to come visit again once the 2020 is out! Thank you for taking the time to write such a glowing review, it means a lot to our little team here!

As the last vineyard we hit on Waiheke, our taste buds were a bit worn out. However, when Deborah from the Obsidian team welcomed us, her personality re-energized us AND our taste buds!!! She was very friendly, knowledgeable, and had great patience given we had our 3 year old and 8 month old with us!
Obsidian is a boutique vineyard, having first been planted in the early 1990's. The tasting area is in a quiet setting just next to the vineyard. Each of the wines we had were quite delightful and stood out as some of the best of the day. Especially "The Obsidian" (their flagship Cabernet Sauvignon led blend) stood out - in fact, we bought a bottle of the 2013 to take home to the U.S.
It may be a bit cliche, but inadvertently, we may have saved the best for last!
CHEERS!

We don't think it's cliche at all! We understand we're a little tucked out of the way so it's always appreciated when folks travel down the valley. Our focus is delivering top notch wines with enthusiastic and knowledge staff, glad to see we hit the mark here! So pleased you grabbed one of the 2013's to take away. That's a special wine, we hope you enjoy reflecting on your memories of Waiheke when you decide to open it. Thank you and look forward to seeing you next time!

Really loved the simple, charming and clever setting here. There was plenty of room to enjoy our tasting at our own pace. And enjoy it we did! Our host was helpful, knowledgeable and enthusiastic - we tried a lovely selection of wines and will definitely return.

As you wind down the long drive you do wonder where the heck is this place, keep going it's well worth it. We had a great wine tasting, the staff were super informative and friendly, making the experience a great one. The wines were also great quality, our group walked away with a load of wine for the cellar.

Best winery in the island thus far. We ended up buying 6 bottles to ship. We are experienced in the wine industry and found their wines to be excellent! Small winery with heart and superb service. You won’t regret it!

Loved the tastings here. Beautiful service. Off the beaten track (a little, nothing is too far on this island) but totally worth the visit! Love these treasures on waiheke. Welcoming, beautiful outdoor space, stunning natural environment. Thank you for the lovely service today x
