The first 4 kilometers of decent, makes you realize "this is going to be tough". It was rough, warm (hot) and very impressive. This is something you have to do. We will do this again sometime, but than without the bus transfer: sleep in the...More
The park is closed in winter, but the drive into the mountains from Chania is worth it. We were there on a Saturday with lots of families playing in the snow and just enjoying the outdoors. You can only drive to the entrance to the...More
This was one for the bucket list. Had a great day hiking in the gorge and enjoying the beautiful scenery and wildlife. The trail is mostly downhill, then pretty flat when you reach the bottom. The difficult part was that every step was on uneven...More
My wife and I trekked the entire 16km walk. We started early morning and it was quite cold but as you start to descend it gets warmer. You have beautiful views initially then as you descend the scene changes to more brush and trees. Then...More

Beautiful Vistas and breathtaking scenery at every turn. Very worthwhile despite the pain! We came to Crete in October mainly because we wanted to walk the gorge and didn’t fancy doing it in the heat and busyness of summer. We are a family of 3...More

Yes Bus Station in Chania is in a square in centre of town, not far from old town. We went to Samaria Gorge on a pre-booked trip via the hotel. Actually you may be less pressured if you go independently! At Chania Bus Station there is a booth where you buy tickets. I didn't know you can get tickets there but I've only been to Crete once. An early start is recommended as you have to get to the end in good time to catch the 5.30pm ferry boat back to civilisation. There is no other way out of the Gorge! Make sure you wear strong boots but not too heavy. We found it very difficult. Many rocks, pebbles, stones to clamber up and down but what an experience. Dramatic scenery and a couple of lovely streams with occasional waterfalls. You'll love it.
