About Underworld Adventures Ltd
Come and explore our hidden gem on The West Coast. In one of the largest unmodified caves in New Zealand, we have two very special tours to offer. The cave adventure itself includes indulging yourself in an abundance of underworld treasures such as stalactites and stalagmites and learning the history of the cave until the most spectacular part of the adventure. The glow worms. When choosing your tour you can choose the Underworld Rafting option, here you float under the Worlds best display of glow worms and float down the river, or you can go on the scenic tour and visit the largest opening on the cave and discover the beautiful galaxies of glow worms on a drier part of the cave. But if your not looking to go caving... Come and join us on our Nile River Rain Forest Train ride that takes you in and out of the Karst Valley with an interpretive description of the history of Charleston

An amazing tour of the caves and so unlike many others, as the caves are viewed in their natural state. ie no man made paths or lighting (you wear a hard hat with a light on it). The tour starts with a most enjoyable ride on a little train into the bush, and then a short walk to one of the cave's entrances. Tips: make sure you have a good breakfast as the tour took around 4 hrs in total. Take water to drink and wear good walking shoes, as you are walking over the limestone floor which can be a bit slippery. Wear warm clothes, though the temp in the caves was a constant 11 degrees c. A degree of fitness does make this tour more enjoyable. The other couple in our tour were going black water rafting which seemed a lot of fun too. Really recommend you go while there are not lots of overseas tourists, as the smaller groups made the tour more personable and quicker to move through the cave.

Had a great time doing this tour. Really good guide, amazing scenery just getting to the cave, on the little train, and then the walk through the bush. Then the cave!! Wow. We did the walk through.Really recommend it.

We happened to drive by and found the sign outside so stop to get more info. We decided to go ahead and it was one of our best decision to do so in this trip. (We did the guides cave tour, not the rafting) We’re family of 4 (2 teenagers) and my knee is not very strong but I could do it no problem. The tour starts from the train journey deep into the forest, then walk about 10-15mins to the entrance of the cave. We then put the helmet on and down into the cave. It was such an amazing experience, the guide was a caver himself so very informative. The lady at the cafe makes good hearty food so it was nice to have some hot food after the adventure :) Thank you so much for fantastic experience. We’ll be back for the rafting next time!

A group of this did this trip. Great commentary from the guide, beautiful scenery. A small walk from the station to the swing bridge. Well worth the cost. Discount for pensioners. Loved Dorothy and Cecil the train engines.

Firstly, don't do the "tubing" cave tour on a hot day. You get kitted out with a 2 piece wetsuit at the Cafe then take a van then little train to the cave. Then you carry your tube up 130 steps (steep ones like 1.5 steps) to the cave entrance. You continue to carry it through 3 levels of the cave tour, which comprises 90% of the experience. Towards the end you can sit in a room & see some glow worms then sit in the tubes and the guide drags the group through while you check out the glow worms, this part was the highlight for me but it was like, 5 minutes out of 4hrs. After this, you "tube" down the lake but it's so low, I kept getting stuck on rocks so you may as well walk it. From their promotional material, I expected the lake to be deeper & hence the tubing to be more fun. It wasn't lol. I wish they kept the tubes at the end of the cave as it's hard to enjoy the tour if you're carrying it round while watching your footing through the caves as it's very slippery. I tried to enjoy it but it's such a long cave tour in uncomfortable conditions like with the wetsuit & tube so I found it hard to focus on what the wonderful, informative guide was saying. You can't bring food but I snuck a muesli bar onto the van on the way, if I hadn't I would've fainted lol. I suspect this may be so you'll be wanting to eat at their Cafe after your tour. All in all, it's not for everyone so be sure you're clear on what to expect. I will say, they take photos which are free to keep but I didn't as I didn't want to remember it! Lol. It's okay, just not for everyone. I kind of just tried to get through it.

Thanks for your review, and I'm very sorry to hear it wasn't entirely what you expected. One of the things we do try to do is to make sure everyone is aware of what lies ahead, prior to departing our base - but clearly we missed the mark on this for your day. I'll take a good look at how we brief visitors as well as our marketing materials, and see if I can improve our communications around just what the tour entails. So glad you enjoyed our lovely GlowWorms though! All the best, Aidan (General Manager)
