Cycled past the lake and to the monastery. Absolutely beautiful and romantic. Great for wildlife, photography and sports. Roads a bit potholed as most of central Russia, lots of nice villages. Swimming and beaches too.

I've been to Ostashkov for three times, always on winter, fortunately or not. Since I love cold and almost no limit for that, I faced tens under zero centigrades on there. Except the church and pinewoods, the lake is the few things to visit there. However i love the place. two things to be done when u get there: take a boat-trip around the monastery as it is on the island to enjoy the views from the water, and get up to the bell-tower to enjoy the views from above. also if u have anough time, and are interested in the history, make sure to visit the museum and have an excursion provided by one of the monks. when thirsty and hungry, get some kvass and pastry.
