We had a lovely trip to the Kongsberg Silver Mines and especially enjoyed all the knowledge the staff had to offer. We learned a lot and had a really good time.

We had a rental car for the day and were looking for things to do around Oslo. Unfortunately, there's not a lot. But the silver mine in Kongsberg sounded like it would be interesting, and it was close enough to be worth the drive. Note that there is a museum and silver mine tour that are in separate locations. This review is for the tour as we did not have time to visit the museum.

There are normally three tours offered: 10:00, 12:00p, and 2:00p. We opted for the 10:00 tour. They actually suggested doing a different tour as the early morning tours are frequently filled with schoolchildren but that was the only time that worked with our schedule. While there were lots of schoolchidren, this actually worked to our advantage as we ended up with a private tour as the only two English speakers (normally there are separate Norwegian and English tours). You will need tickets, and you should buy them ahead of time as availability can be limited.

The tour takes you into the mine in a small enclosed train car. It's about a 15 minute ride. If you don't like loud, small, dark places, this is not for you. It's not a smooth ride, but it wasn't too bad, and earplugs are provided to reduce noise.

The mines are really impressive. They were active for more than 300 years and produced an enormous quantity of silver. It was interesting to learn about mine operations prior to the invention of dynamite. We also learned about German influence on the area and history of the mines in World War II.

The mines are enormous. You will only get to see a small portion of them, but it's plenty to see. In addition to the mines themselves you do get to see some equipment that operated drills and pumps. You will also be able to see a working elevator that dates to the 19th century.

They warn you that it's cold in the mine. This is accurate. It was only a few degrees above freezing. Bring a warm jacket and dress appropriately even if it's warm outside. I found that I was fine without gloves.

If you have even a slight interest in mining or history, Sølvgruvene is a great place to visit. I highly recommend it. The mine is neat to see, our tour guide was awesome, and it was a highly unique experience.

Very nice and educative guided tour. Our guide was very funny and full of interesting information. Just one advice. Dress well, because it's 6 degrees down there and it's pretty cold :-)
Fun fact - across the street is a beautiful lake with resting points. Beautiful scenery and nature sights.

Have been here 3 times already. I always take my friends here if I want to show something special. Guide telling you mountain story, it's very interesting also you can have English speaking guide. Best time to go is summer. Smart to have warm clothes because is just few degrees inside.

We visited the old silver mine in Kongsberg and were just in time for the 10 am trip into the old mine. We did not make it to the museum in Kongsberg town but I guess this is the more exciting part (the ticket for the mine tour does allow access to the museum in the city too). You enter small carriages and are taken about 2.5 km into the mountain where a guided tour starts (the group was split into a Norwegian and English speaking group). Very interesting walk through the mine and the guide had ample time for questions. All in all the tour takes 1.5 hours and is very interesting for all ages and to realize the harsh circumstances in which the miners were working.

Kongsberg became the second largest city in Norway (after Bergen) in the 1700s after silver was discovered and mined for 250 years. While most of the mines dug into the mountains have been filled with water now, a small part is open to tourists and offers a great look into the life back then. Entry is through a short train ride and the tour is short but interesting with the highlight being the different (and dangerous) ways in which entry into the mines evolved over hundreds of years.

Exceptional experience traveling into the mines walking a guided tour for an hour before returning back out to the summer. Bring extra clothes, it is 6*C inside so you will get cold in shorts and T-shirt.
