The journey after collection of permit was smooth. After a mini ghat section ,the moment you have the first glimpse of the engineering marvel, you really feel proud. You need not be an engineer to appreciate the construction. Just stand and admire. You are not supposed to click any images , for security reasons but visitors hardly obey that , which is sad.
Overall , this is a milestone of INDIAN History which every Indian should visit and admire

As am localite, i know each every aspect & surrounding place about Bhakra dam. Am from Nangal dam. To visit Bhakra Dam, one need to take Permit which can be got free of cost from Nangal. There is a PRO(Public relation Office) from where one can easily get permit (8AM to 4PM weekdays & upto 2PM on Sundays). The surrounding views are very nice. 13KM drive from nangal is beautiful. Road conditions are nice. On the way one can stop at Olinda (village) to sit on the shores of Satluj River. From Bhakra one can go to Mata Naina Devi Ji temple. Fish lovers will get fish at very reasonable cost & best taste. All in all must visit place. Just beware of monkeys at Bhakra.

Bhakra Dam is must visit place if you in Ropar District. Due to Security there are some restrictions to enter on Dam or inside Dam. If someone has VIP status then he can obtain permit in Advance from BBMB Head Office, Madhaya Marg Chandigarh or Ministry of Power and Irrigation Delhi. Otherwise Indian citizen can visit up to Dam without any permit and if someone driving Vehicle he can obtained permit from PRO Nangal to drive on Nangal Bhakra road free of cost, just follow road sign. Otherwise Public buses are available. Dam scenery is good there is nice place to sit or picnic. If someone like to eat fish he can go to Bhakra Village Bus Stop and he can enjoyed there. Boats are available to cross lake or go to Baba Balak Nath Temple Deot Sidh at nominal fare.

Bhakra Dam is a concrete gravity dam across the Sutlej River, located at a narrow gorge between two hills, Naina Devi ki dhar and Ramgarh ki dhar, near the (now submerged) upstream Bhakra village in Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh, is India's tallest at 225 m. The length of the dam (measured from the road above it) is 518.25 m; it is 9.1 m broad. Its reservoir, known as the "Gobind Sagar", stores up to 9.34 billion cubic metres of water, enough to drain the whole of Chandigarh, parts of Haryana, Punjab and Delhi. The 90 km long reservoir created by the Bhakra Dam is spread over an area of 168.35 km2. In terms of storage of water, it withholds the third largest reservoir in India, the first being Indira Sagar Dam in Madhya Pradesh with capacity of 12.22 billion cu m and second Nagarjunasagar Dam.
It is 15 km from Nangal City and 20 km from Naina Devi. The Bhakra Dam and Nangal Dam are two separate dams: water flooded from Bhakra Dam is actually controlled and maintained by Nangal Dam.
One has to take permit from PRO office, Nangal. Ask anyone in Nagal, they will guide you to reach here. Its is very simple to get it. Photography not allowed at dam. Security persons will tell you to keep your camera inside your bags. On the north side of dam, one can enjoy boating, 400/- for a big 60 persons capacity boat for 45 minutes, all yours. Or you can have more tourist to share the amount.

Bhakra Dam is a national pride. The vast Gobind Sagar lake, the hills that form the womb of this waterway, gardens and gushing waterscapes invite us to a happy dayspend with food baskets in hand.

Last weekend was a bit special as I got to explore two much awaited destinations on my wish-list i.e. Bhakra Dam and Virasat-e-Khalsa. This review is about Bhakra Dam.
Thought the entire project was astonishing and made us surprised. The first and foremost point that official PRO deputed at Dam told us was: The primary purpose of creating this Dam was Irrigation and not generation of electricity (Strange! Isn’t it?). The electricity is just an alternate product, though the dam is mainly known for generation of electricity only and four major states including Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh are solely dependent on it as far as electricity is concerned.
Made of full concrete (taller than eleven storey building) another things that was told to us was the lift (escalator) which carried all of us to the location of electricity generation, was biggest in Asia as it had a capacity of 52 persons (equals to the capacity of a bus) OMG…
The Bhakra Dam is situated in the Bilaspur District of Himachal Pradesh and one has to obtain special permissoion to visit the Dam. Three types of passes are issued to visit the Dam. 1. White Pass – Common pass, issued just to cross the dam from top. 2. Red/ Pink Pass – Special Pass, issued to visit the Dam, its core areas and some parts electricity generation units also. 3. Pass issued to workers and engineers. Try to get the Red/ Pink Pass if you want to experience it with a different view.
There is another Dam in Punjab which is called Nangal Dam. Sometimes (out of confusion) both the dams together are called Bhakra-Nangal Dam though the fact is that they are two separate dams.
Bhakra Dam was a dream project of first Prime Minister of India who made 11 visits here during its construction. Entirely man made dam is example of great dedication of engineers who worked here day and night with full zest and zeal an gifted this great monument to people of India in 1963.
At one side of the dam is reservoir, which is named as Gobind Sagar Lake. It is home for fishes of different species. The dam is managed by Bhakra Beas Management Board and is an example of great engineering. Jeeyooo…

This place is restricted to all foreign persons, weather you have oci or not. Was there and visited the museum and the police chief, but could not give us permission to visit. The family really wanted to visit this place. Disappointed!

Bhakra dam is one of the highest gravity dams in the world. The Gobind Sagar is one large water body spread over an enormous area with a lot of stillness and calmness. I was able to spemd some really quality time there. A quick 15 min boat ride in this water was so ecstatic. The authoriotes does not allow clicking photographs as it is a point of great national safety and importance. However, while you move ahead and reach toward ls the back of it, you cannot resist clicking some. After the ride, came back for a cup of tea and a maggie. Perfect Combo on a fairly cloudy, pleasant day accompanied by light drizzles at times. Do check the photos I have added for more serene experience.

To reach :
1. Reach to Nangal and grab a bus which takes directly to the bhakra dam. The returning bus is max by 6.15 PM.

2. You can hire a cab which will take you to there and bring back as per your timing convenience. Costed us 800 INR for 2 people for around 3 hours.

PS: Do try the boat ride. Its sweet and costs 150 per person for q duration of 15-20 Min.

The Bhakhra Dam visit was a memorable visit for me. I had been there with my some friends to watch one of the biggest dams in India. When we reached there we saw the beauty of the civil engineering. What a construction is it. This dam is fully made by the concrete. There are two sides of the dam, one side is full of the water of the river Satluj and the other side is connecting the canals used for irrigation purpose and the hydropower plant for the production of electricity. The side which holds the water of Satluj, that side looks like a see. The blue, deep and pure water sines with the sunlight make the dam to look very splendid. Here we knew about the history of this dam. One who loves the beautiful construction in nature's lap should visit here.

Reservoir is seen when moving either of the Bhakra and Naina Devi road. When you are near to Bhakra, reservoir gets closer view and there's boating point. you can also eat fish pakora at the boating point. Due to security reasons, bhakra dam has time restrictions to visit. You can get white pass from PRO Nangal which is valid till 4pm and see beauty standing on the dam. You can get red pass from Sector 19 Chd to get inside the dam and look the operations.

Unfortunately, we reached there at 5 pm. we were not allowed to stop there without pass. Security official told us if we need to have better view of dam so drive down 1.5 km to have a dam front view and really it was nice although water shutters were not open.

in case you need to take white pass, take route from anandpur sahib to nangal (take white pass) to bhakra and then nainadevi.
