Had a wonderful couple of hours at Malmaison today. Beautiful house and gardens. Downstairs is atmospheric and authentic. You can imagine being Napoleon in his library or Josephine in the music room. The top two floors are more of a museum containing fantastic artefacts including...More

Fabulous palace of the first Empress of France, Josephine de Beauharnais (1763 - 1814), Napoleon's first wife. The very must who love the Empire style furniture. I loved particularly the music room, the reception hall, the library and above all her spendid bedroom conceived as...More

As a fan of both straight history and historical fiction and movies, Malmaison offers the chance to really see the private Napoleon and Josephine in the beautifully preserved home that Josephine created expressly to enchant him. So many scenes from their private life took place...More

If you have a couple of hours I highly recommend a visit here. It is very charming and gives a view of how Napoleon Bonaparte lived. It is a way of making history come alive and make historical people become real.

Malmaison is smallish for a Chateau. The visit is self guided. Some English captions. We thought it looked a bit run down. 6.50 Euros. Free parking.

This was an excursion included in our AMA Waterways River Cruise from Paris to Normandy. This was my first trip to France; and I am not an experienced European traveler. That being said, I found this to be delightful. Josephine was quite a woman! We...More

A must see if you have been to Paris several times. But note that it might be difficult to find a place to eat nearby - at least on a Monday in July. However, a picnic in the park could be recommended.

Despite being Napoleon and Josephine' house ( until he dumped her), surprisingly modest house in size, quality and furnishings. Nothing special. A little mini-museum upstairs was more interesting for its history, but not worth a tourist's limited and extremely valuable time. There are a large...More

If you go in season, when the flowers are in bloom, 4 hours would be good. The Chateau can be seen in an hour and the grounds in another hour but if you really want to stop and enjoy the flowers allow a little more.

As I recall there is no cafe - the Chateau is too small to warrant a cafe on the premises. If you look at a map of the area, about a mile away is the town center for Ruell-Malmaison and there seems to be a number of... More
