Overlooking the Clyde river Bothwell castle is steeped in history. Built in the late 13th century, severely damaged in the Wars of Independence, and then rebuilt, there are plenty of unique features to view. Unfortunately during my visit there was restoration work going on, but...More

Went to see the castle. Nothing overly exciting and couldn’t get inside due to “unforeseen circumstances” which weren’t noted anywhere on the website. Another castle off the list but could be more to do. Ground around it are lovely though.

Scaffolding outside for many months with n sign of restoration. To pay admission is understandable but not for a 10 min visit as was nothing to see that you can't from the entrance.

From the outside Bothwell Castle doesn't seem that inspiring. Its slightly better inside . Being a member of English Heritage you get free admission, so what's the harm. There was a couple having their wedding photos taken outside the castle when we arrived.

Maybe because parts are closed off for repairs, but a bit disappointing. Reckon you can see it all in 15 minutes. It has an interesting history but not really worth the detour.

We went after hours and there wasn't much to see. This was a castle you have to pay to get in to, so I am glad we just went when it was closed. We walked around the outside, and then left.

What battles have been fought here, if only the ground and walls could speak! Besieged 6 times in its history. Very important in Scottish history. On the banks of the Clyde, very scenic ruins. We visited on a 28 degree day and it was glorious....More

There is a station in Bothwell which is about a mile away from the castle. Think trains are fairly regular.

You might check with the Castle where you buy the tickets. I think they would be able to answer that.

I am afraid this site does not have a café only a small shop/ticket office that sells refreshments including coffee and soft drinks as well as various other items.
