We went after hours and there wasn't much to see. This was a castle you have to pay to get in to, so I am glad we just went when it was closed. We walked around the outside, and then left.

What battles have been fought here, if only the ground and walls could speak! Besieged 6 times in its history. Very important in Scottish history. On the banks of the Clyde, very scenic ruins. We visited on a 28 degree day and it was glorious....More

We saw Bothwell one the last day of our vacation. Two weeks of touring Castles, churches, cathedrals and abbeys. Perhaps if it had been on the first day we would have been more impressed. While it does have some interesting architectural features, it was not...More

Beautiful castle. Great for dog walks etc. Lovely forest walks along the Clyde. Close to golf club? Looks different every time you see it, winter summer etc.

We visited Bothwell Castle on Saturday afternoon. On arrival we were told they would not be charging admission as quite a bit of the castle is currently fenced off for restoration works. This was fair enough, but I bought a wee guide book anyway for...More

We got there too late in the day as they were just closing the gate to the castle. We couldn't explore the interior but the exterior is exceptionally photogenic. The castle sits in a well manicured park-like setting. The red stone of the castle against...More

This ruin sits in a nice park like setting and is beautiful to photograph. The colors were striking and made a nice contrast with the green grass. As always, would have loved more time to explore!

Quite interesting ruin with good information plaques about its history. Ate our picnic on one of the handily placed benches. Not sure if we would have paid entrance fee if we had not had Historic Scotland annual membership this year.

There is a station in Bothwell which is about a mile away from the castle. Think trains are fairly regular.

You might check with the Castle where you buy the tickets. I think they would be able to answer that.

I am afraid this site does not have a café only a small shop/ticket office that sells refreshments including coffee and soft drinks as well as various other items.
