Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I don't recommend making a detour to this town. After 2 hours drive on mountain roads, we were happy to take a guided tour of the city and the castle fort. Upon arrival around 11:00 we learn that there is only one guided tour per day and that there is no more room (Reservation required). With the number of tourists 2 to 3 daily visits could easily be arranged. For the fort of the failed castle also it is not the right day. Briancon is the only city that opens its forts in turn and if you do not come across the good day too bad for you. But that's not all. We want to fall back on the fort of the day, but still disappointment because the forts are not open all day but only for the guided tour with the costumed troop at 18:00. Not being hot to make the way back in the night passes we left without visiting anything in the early afternoon. In short, I have never seen a city with such a rich historical heritage fail to highlight it. To flee

From the paid parking , visiting the city left us with a bad Impression.. few historical signs , no explanatory circuit .. the streets are dirty and very poorly maintained.. no flowers
Dozens of restaurants .. 2 or 3 shops of pretty things!
Not worth a visit
The only thing to see is the view
d set of all forts from the road leading to Italy!!

Years ago we spent the night at a hotel in Briancon. In a hurry to get to Milan, we left early the next morning with the resolve to come back and spend some time. We finally got back - and found a medieval city-within-a-city which we totally missed in our earlier visit. Cite Vauban is both unbelievable and exciting. We'll be back.

There were garbage in every corner, dog poo along the walkways while we made our way here. Only locals could have done it.

Briancon is small but oh so pretty. Lovely place to walk around, have something to drink on one of the terraces, eat raclette at night and then explore a little more.

Four of us spent five nights in Briancon. We dined inside the old walled city four of the nights and returned one morning to visit the local handcraft store inside city walls. It had not been open when we were in La cité Vauban for dinners and wandering through the delightfully historic old walled fortress. This is a UNESCO site. I had read of it before leaving the USA and was disappointed to not learn much more. The old walls tell stories, but being a typically language challenged American, without French, I was not able to learn much more. One of the four women, our trusty guide, is fluent in French and helped us navigate the small villages. We visited small spots more removed, historical, and fabulously beautiful than I would ever venture into without the language abilities of Kathy Cosley, guide extraordinaire.

The Lonely Planet describes this very old French cite as very far from anywhere. It certainly is. But if you do decide to make the journey, I think it is somewhere quite different and worth seeing. Essentially, it is a walled city, with huge ramparts, a scary bridge, a maze of little walkways through a medieval type of town, which oozes with old-world charm. From outside the railway station in Grenoble, France, the LER bus route 35 takes you there in 3 hours, at a cost of E20 each way. I did the return bus journey in September 2016 (6 hours' travelling) in 1 day and spent about 2 1/2 hours walking the town. On your way there and home again, your bus will travel through many, many tunnels, one of which is 13 (yes, thirteen) km long. The former, dramatic route only took 2 1/2 hours from Grenoble, but the tunnel collapsed in 2015 and will not be re-built until approx. June 2017. The new route is mostly flat for the first 2 1/4 hours; but the final 3/4 hour is made up of many hair-pin bends. Surprisingly, I was not bus sick, thanks to the expert driving of our bus driver who negotiated the hair pin bends with calm and expert driving. It is a place like no other ... somewhere that you will never see again.

Fabulous, just amazing. Walk in over the drawbridge and you are plunged back hundreds of years. What a truly wonderful place. So special.
