I go up Hemi McShitBang regularly for exercise and can say after the first few time it gets quite boring. The views are not that great, if you want real views got to the Tararua Ranges or the Southern Alps.

It takes about 45 minutes to get to the first lookout for great views over Kapiti Island and to the south. A reasonable degree of fitness is required, or a perfect track to use for building up fitness. Plenty of shade under a wonderful canopy...More

We started doing this track a few weeks ago in a bid to up our fitness. Great to have the tree cover as it keeps you a bit cooler as you sweat your way up to the top, a very pleasant climb in dappled light....More

The day we went followed some heavy rain, so the track was very muddy in places. It's a reasonable hike to the lookout, which unfortunately wasn't signed (it's a branch off the main track). So we missed it and carried on to the track to...More

A beautiful track I've completed too many times to remember. WELL WORTH the panting at the start from the watertower side going up. Reasonable level the whole way to Huia, Medium or less for the walk to the Summit and back. Go Hemi!

The track to the top of the Hemi Matenga track is quite demanding, a little steep in places, but in good condition and well worth the effort for the amazing views of the Kapiti Coast.

The small driveway from the road up to the entrance point of Hemi Matenga, is like a cheeky nod to what lies ahead. A signposted 45min walk to the Lookout, or 3 hour loop track is based on someone with reasonable level of fitness. If...More

It's a lovely walk. No real top as such, there is a look out and that's where we normally turn back with the kids but the track does a full loop which ends about 25 mins walk along various roads back to the car.

The long version of this walk took us four hours with three kids and a dog but was stunningly beautiful. It felt like being on top of the world. Very muddy coming down in winter. Walking sticks will help.
