Interesting to see the insides laid bare with fireplaces up on the wall twenty feet up, and outhouses with funny faces. The walk there is better than the effort to get there. However it had been much larger and has an interesting history fending off...More

My wife and I visited Belsay Castle and we were not disappointed. The staff of English Heritage were very friendly and helpful. Although the Hall and the Castle are just ruins they provide a lovely backdrop to the unusual Gardens, which were kept in immaculate...More

As castles go this one is on the small side but it has an accessible roof with views over the sheep safely grazing in the surrounding fields. Accessed from Belsay Hall the castle benefits from being close to the quarry gardens which are a fascinating...More

Take care on the spiral staircase and keep to the outside; but its well worth the effort to see the views from the top!

Belsay Castle is an English Heritage property. There is an unfurnished manor house, which is architecturally interesting, both beautiful formal gardens and a very informal fantastical quarry garden leading to the old castle. There is (deliberately) little interpretation but it is quite easy to enjoy...More

Visiting Belsay Hall you are invited to walk through the quarry gardens to visit the older castle buildings. Its well worth the effort! Largely ruined castle with added wings but great to explore and the quarry gardens are amazing.
