Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is the slogan on the website, and it's true. Visit this place if you want to take a dip into a beautiful and well preserved natural environment. And all of a sudden you see the Greencastle Fort strategically built to have the broadest view on the bay. The place is perfectly kept, despite it's far from the important touristic routes and you can visit it for free (I think they should charge a symbolic quote, there's even a guardian checking place and parking). Great view from the towers, on clear days you can see very far from here the coast and thousands of birds.

I only spent a short time around this 13th Century, facility/attraction. However, the views from the castle - especially of Carlingford Lough and the Haulbowline Lighthouse - are perhaps more interesting than the castle, itself.
It's still worth a visit - especially if you intend using the adjacent Greencastle-Gleenore (Carlingford) Ferry.
Be careful of the low arches and the stone steps. Not suitable for most disabled people. The car park is small.
Castle entrance, and car park free.

it is a good experience with breathtaking scenery lots of history and panoramic views very close to Kilkeel which has now the added interest of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex being the Baron and Baroness of Kilkeel.
Taking the ferry from Greenore/Carlingford is an added pleasure showing the beauty of the Loch

I’m not being bias but this is another place close to Were I live such beauty around us. Mountains ⛰ and the sea all rolled in to one.. 😍 ferry ⛴ just opposite the castle where you can hope on by foot or take the car. my advice take the car and go to Carlingford another beautiful spot. My photos are from inside the castle some great history free to the public to walk around.. best to mind the steps as the building is old and with the open roof it makes them slippy. We get a lot of rain in Northern Ireland. 😂☔️

We were on our way to Downpatrick for a scenic train ride and we left the main roadway to find food because the kids were hungry. We saw Greencastle in the distance and made our way there to check it out. There was a guy working there and basically overseeing the grounds. He gave each of the kids maps/guide papers and we went in and explored. This ruin of a castle was one of our favorite parts of the trip and we spent at least an hour exploring. Be careful when entering, the driveway was a bit hidden between 2 plots of land. There is a small car park. We were lucky to have perfect weather to enjoy the beautiful views. When we finally got back in the road we barely made it to the last train ride of the day, but it was a detour worth taking. Our 3 boys asked to return on our next trip to Ireland and Northern Ireland.

This Norman castle that once guarded the entrance to Carlingford Lough is worth a visit if you’re in the Mournes. Entrance is free, and there are some information boards, but apart from that you’re pretty much on your own. Safety rails have been installed to allow the fit to climb Hugh, which I recommend for the impressive views, especially if you’re a photographer.

Lovely castle to look around. Free entrance. Allowed to climb around but be careful of low stone arches or you will get a rather sore bump to your head. Well worth a visit if your in the area.

One of those little off-the-beaten-track gems, in the most tranquil of settings overlooking Carlingford Lough.

Views are fabulous and it is an easy place to pass the time waiting on the hourly ferry across Carlingford Loch. The history is well outlined on placards. The entrance to the car park is very narrow (1 lane) and you have space for about 5 cars.

We had a quick visit to Greencastle while waiting for our ferry. Unfortunately it was closed but none the less we had a walk around and were impressed. Would like to return when its open to visitors.
