Good place for a walk around the reservoir with views of the Washburn valley. Tea room at the heritage centre is excellent.

Normally Swinsty reservoir is a delight and yesterday being a beautiful day was another chance for us to experience this. Yorkshire Water usually do an excellent job with allowing access to their reservoirs for the public and most are wonderful. However, currently they appear to doing maintenance and as a result the normal footpath is diverted. Unfortunately this is through mud, mud and more mud, despite the fact there has been no appreciable rain for several days. Whilst at this time of the year it is probably appropriate to be reminded of the mud that soldiers in the First World War had to endure in the trenches of Europe having just had Remembrance and Armistice days; presumably few of these soldiers would have regarded their experiences however, as a pleasure. It therefore, makes one wonder why Yorkshire Water would wish to inflict similar suffering on the general public out to enjoy themselves in the Yorkshire countryside, many of whom appeared to be of retirement ages. We came back being frankly unable to recall a similar experience elsewhere. We even met a representative of the contractor who could not understand it either. Water was at a premium when we got back home with the washing machine, showers and hosepipe to wash the dog being used incessantly. Presumably this is some bizarre new marketing strategy of Yorkshire Water to get us to use more of this precious resource. Either that, or whoever, dreamt up this crazy route did it from a map without bothering to walk it personally. The maps showing the route do not give a reasonable idea of what is involved and it would be best not to start after about 1-2pm if one wants to get back in daylight. The strategically placed cow field in the middle of the route would probably best be crossed before night time. Preferable to avoid this routing altogether until it dries out.

Went for a walk at Swinsty today and although the start of the walk was lovely with beautiful scenery, currently there's a diversion in place and it takes you miles out of your way through lots of mud and it's not well signposted either, I would avoid and do Fewston instead. I came back absolutely covered in mud after falling several times, it was an absolute quagmire!!! Definitely need wellies if going there!!

This is one of our favourite walks but today we followed the diversion as posted around the reservoir . It was horrendous! Poor signage and footpath was a quagmire. Path took us through a field of bullocks who blocked the way and we had to wade through a bog. Added almost 3 miles to the route. Avoid this until work completed or you are an experienced walker with appropriate clothing.
