Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

access via a short walk across a paddock. Wonderful basalt columns with great photographic opportunities. Permission to access required as access is across private land and a small charge is made.

The columns are at least as impressive as more famous locations (such as the Giant’s Causeway) and the sea beside them teams with fish and shellfish. There is now restricted access but the main accommodation places provide tours. A key visit on the island.

Great place to visit if you are interested in Geology. These volcanic columns (cooling structures) are situated at Ohira Bay, Northern Chatham Islands. These lava flows erupted on land 85-80 million years ago.

This is one of the few places in the world where basalt columns exist by the sea. Access is via arrangement and a small fee paid to the farmer of this land to access the beach. We travelled across several paddocks by bus to reach the shoreline. Our guide knew exactly the best way to access the beach. The columns are quite extensive both in the water and those more exposed away from the shoreline.

Greg took us out to the basalt columns and explained how they were formed and the cultural history of the spot. It was awesome

Access to the Basalt Columns is across private land and the gate may well be locked. If you are lucky enough to get there (and I wold advise making arrangements through a local) you will see a smaller version of the famous Irish Giant's Causeway. A really special sight!

Unique 5 sided rock columns in an unspoilt state. Need to prearrange visit as it is on private land and gates are locked so only those authorised can go there

In a tour group so do not know cost to visit but it is a drive across private farm land. Would be spectacular on a bright day but still amazing as it is a rare formation.

The basalt columns on the Chatham Islands are lovely (think Giants Causeway in Ireland, just a bit smaller and with a lot fewer tourists!)

It's a relatively easy walk down to the main grouping, with wonderful views across the bay and out to sea. Wear sensible shoes.

The columns are beautifully weathered and black/grey in the water, with some whiter ones further in from the sea. I assume the paler colour is due to lichen. It's a great place for wandering around and admiring the scenery.

Phone ahead to agree access with the owner, as the columns are on private land. Your host should be able to sort this for you.

If you get a chance to go here these are well worth seeing if you have the slightest interest in photography, geology, physical geography or just cool coastlines. Similar formations to those off west coast of Scotland, and on Giant's Causeway, but you might be the only person there.
