Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We visited with a large group so had permission to eat our picnic here. The visit was informative and made very interesting by Helen who is currently living in the cottage in this wild and rugged landscape. We had access to the beach from the cottage. Permission to visit must be sought before going and there is a nominal charge.

Speaking to the septuagenarian Helen at her Stone Cottage was the most interesting thing I did on the Chathams.

Helen grew up here and continues to live quite happily off the grid in a house built by German farmer missionaries in the 1800s.

Helen’s stories of life in the Chatham’s then and now are fascinating. She has a keen sense of humour and story.

A must visit if you make it to this remote group of islands.

While the cottage is indeed a treasure, it's the tenant who is the real gem. Helen is nothing short of inspirational. Friendly and welcoming and a font of knowledge, with stories to share. I am blown away that in winter she can stay tucked up in the cottage for 4 months, and only goes to town once a week at other times. What a woman. And to see her collecting eggs on her 'patented' egg retrieval ladder is both hilarious and worrying.... Thanks Helen, I feel privileged to have visited.

One the highlights of the Chathams. The current owners let the granddaughter of the previous owner live there, She is in her 60's.She is a book of knowledge of the place, and will take you on a walk through the house and show you all the original parts, very interesting, and if you a lucky she will take you to the beach where she tells stories of when she was a child living on that farm .Friendly , nice , informative.

The Stone Cottage is a lovingly cared for old cottage which Helen has built a beautiful garden around. Don't miss the nearby beach, either. Helen genuinely loves meeting people (and so do her lovely dogs) and is a fount of information about the house and the old ways of life, without being overbearing at all. This is a great place to spend an hour or two chatting and enjoying the lovely garden.

It's a great day out to visit this historic cottage was built from local stone around the 1870's by the German Missionaries. Helen has a lot of knowledge about the house and the area, she makes you feel welcome. The gardens are an absolute credit to her.

We listened to Helen on the radio who lived there totally off the grid but ended up having medical problems and had to go back to the main land. Chooks still around and bit of a paddock drive to get there. Look out for deep ridges
