Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Fantastic one day trip to Pitt Island! An absolute „Must“ for the historically and geologically interested! Fly over with the charming pilot Stefan and be shown around the island by the equally charming and very knowledgeable Brent. Have lunch at the lodge lovingly prepared by Brents wife Bernadette. Don’t hesitate to let them know if you are vegetarian or vegan. „Bernie“ caters for all! Made so many great photos and learnt so much more about NZ history, flora and fauna! If you ask Stefan nicely, he may even let you sit in the front of the plane. Very cool!

Leaving Chatham Island Airport , my five tour companions climbed on board the 6 seater Cessna - flown by John, who is professional and knowledge in his chosen profession. A beautiful clear day, gave us fantastic views of the Island.
The airstrip is a designated paddock with freshly mowed grass, we were met by Lisa our guide for the day.
Lisa informed us of the local history of the Island, we were privileged to see the Petrol bird sitting and protecting her egg in the predator free bush reserve, cared for by DOC.
The owners of the Flowerpot Lodge Brent and Bernie Mallinson provided a scrumptious lunch using the local cuisine, yummy.
Bernie, Lisa's sister in-law is a 5 generations direct descendant of Frederick Hunt, the first permanent European settler.
I recommend you go and take this tour. As you have ventured out to Chatham Island it would be a shame to miss this true Gem, weather permitting unfortunately.

So very glad we took the opportunity to visit this special part of the world. Flight was in a 6 seater Cessna - flown by Jackson who was fantastic ! Met at airstrip by Chewy who drive us all over the island and had lots of great stories and history to share - along with a lot of laughs ! If you get the chance you MUST visit Pitt - the most easterly point of NZ and somewhere very very special !

Day tour flights to Pitt Island are dependant on suitable weather conditions. Weather wasn't a problem but the Cessna needed repair and couldn't come back for our little group. So we came from Pitt back to Owenga by fishing boat. Three of us were filled with dread on the hour-long crossing on a choppy sea.
Apart from that, our 'Full Day Tour' didn't start until 10am when our flight left Waitangi's Tuuta Airport, and before 3pm we were left to wander about at the jetty on Pitt, waiting to return. The itinerary specifically includes Glory Cottage, but our group of five did not see Glory Cottage. Nor did we receive an apology for the omission.
We took this day tour in 2005 and were so impressed with the amazing variety of sightseeing then, that we booked again in 2020. The tour now bears little resemblance to the original one. Instead of several spectacular lookouts, this time we were taken to only one. The remainder of the time was filled with a wander through forest and verbal history lessons.
If you enjoy a history lecture, then this tour may be for you. At $390 per person, this shortened version with few photo opportunities was a huge disappointment.

We visited Pitt Island for a day trip a few days late after some awful weather delayed it. Brent met our party of four at the airport with other lodge guests. He had organised a great day with a bush walk and bird-sighting in the morning, followed by a climb up Mount Hakepa in the afternoon-very kindly accommodating my request to do this. It was a tough climb, with most guests unable to do it due to strong winds, but well worth the effort in the end! Our day finished with a quick visit to Glory Cottage- only regret was not having time to visit Flowerpot Bay lodge. Brent was definitely the most professional operator we encountered during our trip- highly recommend this great day trip.

I am thinking of visiting PItt ISLAND from the Chatham Islands as a day trip. Is there a ferry, or available?

We went over on a small boat, the Chatham Express with a very competent young skipper, Matt. It only took 1/2 hour. Our flight was cancelled due to fog. Going by boat was supposed to be cheaper but the hotel still charged the same, $400 each for the day tour but it was a great island to visit.
