Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A short delightful easy walk which takes you from the road (along the ocean) to a rocky beach on the ocean through dense bush forest.

A pleasant 30 minute round trip that allows the cascade of water sounds to be echoed by bird song, accompanied by the whistle of winds above the first canopy, and climaxing with the timpani of waves against rock at the small pebbly beach. A well-formed and -maintained gravel path, supplemented by board walk and short footbridges, allows for an easy walk, despite the slight gradient in places. Worth the drive in itself.

Lovely drive out to Jacksons Bay from Haast. About 40 mins. Road is good, unfortunately we went out in afternoon too late for The Craypot. Closed at 3 pm

Good afternoon Jamie, what a shame you didn't enjoy Jackson Bay. Historically Jackson Bay is a very important area in South Westland and through its tough beginnings, began the pioneer settlements here in the 1860's. Did you walk the Wharekai Te Kou trail? As this is the review for the walk, not the drive or the eatery.

Had always wanted to visit Jackson Bay, so made the effort. We found that the journey was as good as the destination. It had been pouring all night and the road crosses at least six bridges, so the rivers were in flood. We were early enough to come across some flooding over the road. (Not sure what we would have done if we couldn't get back) Jackson Bay itself was ok, but the food truck was closed. Enjoyable as an outing

Bush on either side in places and just a different world. Be careful as you might meet a penguin on the road. They have the right of way.

Such a lovely, easy drive from Haast, long straight roads. There is no General Store there so take food and drink with you. The only place to eat is the Craypot for Fish and Chips etc. Sadly we didn't get to eat there as we were not forewarned of the Sandflies and just how bad they were. Just standing and waiting to order my hubby was getting bitten so we left and missed out. There a long wharf but once again the sandflies were eating us as we walked along the wharf. Beach is pebble not sand. There's a small, easy walk (15 minutes) over to one of the beaches at the end of the road. Very stoney, rocky bay and yes sandflies again! Public toilets available.

It is worth visiting just for the drive through this unique coastal landscape with its rugged west coast beaches, rivers, and forest.
Wharakai Te Kou is actually a short walking track through the forest from Jackson Bay.
Jackson Bay is an interesting location in itself, with a large wharf and the Craypot Cafe.
The Craypot Cafe does great fish & chip style meals but only opens for part of the year, so check this out first as there is no where else to get a meal here.
There are very good public toilets here.
