Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Excellent staff providing informative advice and written material to support exploration in the area. Fabulous displays of flora and fauna and local history. You can easily spend an hour at this place. The surrounds are also lovely

We went in expecting we might learn about things to do in the area. We did NOT expect to have a 30 minute walk-through back area that went into the geological, ecological, and societal background of the whole region. Very neat exhibit for a free little info centre!

A bit of a rare gem I think. Stopped in for a quick look about 4pm and could have spent a while wandering through the exhibitions but for closing time at 4.30pm. Helpful staff greeted and farewelled us, and the exhibitions and displays were interesting on top if the usual maps and guides available.
Definitely worth a look if you are in the area.

Opened in 1991 to assist Kiwis better understand the value and significance of the World Heritage Park that is South Westland.

And it looks like there has been little done to keep it updated and vibrant.

Photos are faded, like boxes are not functioning, the floor creaks and you really wouldn’t think Māori existed prior to Haast “discovering “ the pass.

A poor show all round.

But the one staff member on site was great.

Thank you for your review. Yes, you are correct alot of the exhibits are original to the building and are over 30 years old. In 2020 Pounamu Pathways was successful in securing $17.9m to develop state-of-the-art hubs, which will use innovative digital technology to bring alive the Coast's culture and history with an emphasis on pounamu and early Māori connections, Haast is included in this project.

The visitor centre is large (two floors) and has lots of displays and information. Pretty quiet when we were there due to Covid. Large clean toilets and plenty of car parking. We were after information on seeing the Penguins at Monro beach - there were displays and information. Unfortunately, the information on where to see the penguins from the DoC staff-member was, well, misleading and wrong. It didn't matter that much because we found our way round the little beach, but I'm not sure the staff member we spoke to had ever been there!

This centre has such great information and history presented in an exciting way. If you have children with you get them to find the crested penguins. Always call in here.

This is the best information centre I have been to in NZ , it is like a museum with lots of information about the history of the area. Make sure you leave at least an hour to read the information so you can appreciate where you are.

Because we would be staying at the Lake Paringa Lodge for 3 months, we needed to know about local walks and places of interest, as well get information on shopping and medical/emergency services. The staff members at the centre gave us everything we needed to know, as well as sharing tips and advice on aspects of local life that were most helpful. I think a visit to the centre is indispensable to anyone spending any time in the area.
