The Bürresheim Castle is a huge mass in the German locality of Sankt Johann, very near the city of Mayen, in the Eifel region (State of Rheinland-Pfalz). It lies in the hub of a beautiful valley surrounded by mountains, woods and water streams. That landscape, therefore, enhances the relevance of the building complex which constitutes the Castle. It's an imposing medieval fortress built in the 12th century. At any rate, the construction of the buildings of which that stronghold consists extended throughout some centuries; being originally a medieval fortress evolving gradually to the baroque residential palace which may be beheld nowadays. That's also the reason why in the Castle a variety of architectural styles can be observed. It's one of the few castles in the German Eifel region which have never endured any damages as a consequence of wars or natural calamities or any other reason whatsoever.
As a matter of fact, the stated complex consists of two sections: That to the West is called the “Castle of Cologne” in a clear reference to the archbishops of Cologne, who had been feudal lords in the area. The section to the East has no particular name but takes that of the whole complex.
The main entrance to the Castle is done through a nice pointed arch. Once through the arch one finds himself in a short open air corridor at whose end it's necessary to proceed through a tunnel towards a beautiful courtyard. It's a very nice place on account of the peaceful atmosphere reigning there and the beauty of the building wings, placed on the sides of the courtyard diagonally against each other thus making up the perimeter of the courtyard, whose baroque entrances and dormer windows structures are really marvellous. One of the outbuildings of the edifice to which one can accede from that courtyard looks like a kitchen. The ancient furniture there located, and the chimney are very interesting. Other great constructions worth being observed are the keep, dating to the 12th century, the house of the bailiff, lying opposite to the keep and the residential building in late gothic style.
The Castle interior has a magnificent design. Some details thereof are really remarkable. For example, the walls of one of the rooms are covered with a kind of wallpaper made of real leather of a very good quality. Owing to the valuable original furniture there placed by the noble occupiers of the Castle throughout the generations, and the paintings hanging from its walls one may have sometimes the impression of being in a museum. It's thus a very interesting interior whose contemplation makes any art lover really exhilarated.
The baroque gardens which find themselves by the Castle are splendid. Besides, the sight of the Castle which one can enjoy from the point where the gardens are is superb. It's absolutely advisable to go to the point concerned just to enjoy the view of the Castle in all its splendour.
The visit of the Castle is therefore by all means recommendable. Unfortunately, all the tours inside are guided ones, what restricts substantially the possibility to apprehend the artistic value of the building interior as well as of all the items housed within its walls due to the short time which can be dedicated to that visit, with the great detriment that implies.

We visited the castle, it is surely well maintained but when I do a relative study of all the other castles I have visited in general throughout the world ,its seen that this is a poor visit . there is a TEMPLE in Cambodia called Ankor wat temple it is said to be more than 2000+ years and it takes at least 7 days to get a glimpse of it and if your are a student or a thesis writer than you need to at least stay for a month there . In castles of Europe it shows how MONARCHY lived and even today lives in sheer LUST LUXURY AND ABANDANCE . It s good castle in terms of construction architecture maintainence because that's the ONLY SOURCE OF INCOME ( tourist visits) for locals . I am a thesis writer and look into the depth of all structures around the world and history . if one visits asia , most monarchs lived a life of COMMENER and did not build huge castles for personal stay and tourture like the one where ROYAL PALACE OF QUEEN OF BRITION etc . so all in all if u are just going to have fun its ok and take ur little kids to show fairy tale stories but if u are a intellectual please do have that perspective in mind and try to learn history through these living monuments of monarchy all around the world .

The castle is beautiful and photogenic on the outside, with formal gardens and nicely restored "gingerbread" buildings, lots of flowers and rock facades. More interesting, however, is the inside which allows the visitor to see the castle sections built in various time periods from 1180 to the 1700s pretty much as they were. The tour guide was very knowledgeable, but spoke German only. Loved the original beams, doors, tile floors, and other structural details.

This castle is kinda off the beaten path. They have tours on the half hour that take you through a lot of the castle, but, they are only in German. There are no big crowds and the tour is leisurely.

This castle is as wonderful inside as it is outside. There are only guided tours inside but these are quite regular irrespective of the group size. My guide did not speak English but she did her best to explain everything and we muddled through with her limited English and my very limited German. A very pleasant visit and recommended

We stopped in at Schloss Buerresheim after a visit to Burg Eltz, it’s only a 30 minute drive away. This castle is very much unspoiled by the flocks of tourists, or the 19th century penchant for rebuilding and redecorating older castles (as is the case at Burg Eltz and the Reichsburg Cochem, also in the area.)

It's located in beautiful forrest-land north-west of Mayen - a pleasant drive.

The tour was only in German, but the guide was friendly and worked hard to communicate with us. This Schloss gives a much better feel for life in a castle many hundreds of years ago.

We recently visited this castle on the only rainy day of our holiday. The entry is few euro's and even though the guided tour is conducted in German, you can keep up to speed with the small well translated leaflet. I was fortunate that my husband speaks german, so he filled in the blanks. It was well worth the drive and I thoroughly enjoyed our short but informative visit.

This is a nice castle well worth seeing. It is close to the Maria Laach monastry. It you do both on the same day it will make for a wonderful day out. Individually, we looked around each for about 1 1/2 hours so a bit short for a long day trip. The area is lovely and there are plenty of nice hiking trails. The castle tour is in German but they have a guide written in English that you can buy for a small fee.

When traveling to Europe its always a must for me to visit historic spots like castles and this tome it was no exception. This was the third castle for me to see in 2 weeks and it seems to be getting better! Again another majestic castle ! The rooms and furniture really takes you back in time . Unfortunately the tour was in German so j had to content myself with the booklet . It was a lovely courtyard and is in midst of alot of greenery ! Love this place!!

We deliberately targetted this castle for a visit on our most recent trip to Europe. It truly is a fairytale castle. It was a slightly dull day in September promising (as indeed it delivered) a gorgeous day when the sun burned off. Sadly you can't go indoors without doing the tour and, on the day we got there we hadn't the time but we did see plenty. It's splendid situation does make it a memorable visit and I would advise others to make time for the tour as we will do next time we are in this part of the world. The drive through Eifel (slate) country was fantastic. It was good to see maintenance work being conducted.
