A trip to the Tegelberg is worthwhile in almost any season. Of course, good weather with good visibility is an advantage. The ride on the Tegelberg cable car is an experience in itself. It is breathtaking how steeply the cable car climbs. If you are lucky, the attendant on the ride will explain the area or delight you with Bavarian humor. At the top, a fantastic view of the lake and mountain landscape awaits the climbers. Paragliders and hang gliders often take off from there, "plunge" down the slope and shortly afterwards circle above the spectators. If you feel like it, you can make a detour to the summit. We decided to descend via the place of reflection to Bleckenau. The first part is slightly alpine (mountain boots are mandatory), then a beautiful path, partially shaded, rocky, steep but with great views. This is followed by a long descent through the forest and finally an annoying climb on asphalt to Bleckenau. There we have a snack break and then take the bus back to the castles. Beautiful, but a descent of around 500 meters. It is worth it. Walking time - including photo stops and admiring the mountain scenery - about 2.5 to 3 hours. Relatively few fellow hikers.

We are 2 adults and an 8-year-old child and took the gondola up to the Tegelberg for 36 euros. We had to wait in line for about 15 minutes, and the parking fee for the whole day is 5 euros. Once we got to the top, we had a great view and a good hiking route. First we went a little higher almost to the summit cross and then a beautiful panoramic path down. The route was easy to walk even with an 8-year-old child and the stops at the two alpine pastures were excellent. The view of the royal castles and the lakes was the highlight for me personally. We would definitely recommend it and do it again.

A must do. Take the cable lift up the mountain and walk down the path to Bleckenau. Fantastic views, the eternal silence (only some birds from time to time). It is a really easy path, ever for kids. Take somewhere 3h if you want to enjoy the nature. Yes paragliding goes faster.
The path from Bleckenau to schloss Neuschwanstein is less attractive though. If you are a large group, split up so you can hear the silence :-)

Tegelberg (Mount Tegel) offers really spectacular views when the weather is good. This a must visit when you are in this neighborhood. Nice experience.

Paragliding is popular. There are lot of climbers. We visited on the same day the beautiful Neuschwanstein castle.

Wonderful view. Quick funicular ride up. Challenging hike down - slippery rocks from rain and steep - worth the amazing views. Took our family 1.45 hrs (listed as taking 2.5 hrs)

I combined my hike up to Mt. Tegelberg with a trip to the Neuschwanstein Castle (I did not go inside the castle though). From Munich, I bought a Bayern ticket (22 euros, 4 euros extra for every extra person up to total 5 people: this was in July 2012). Took a regional train from Munich Hauptbahnhof to Fussen, then a bus (73 or 78) to Hohenschwangau. There’s no way you can miss these buses or need to look for them because everyone goes their way!!

I hiked up to Neuschwanstein on the Pollat Gorge trail. That was a very good decision as the trail is beautiful and avoids the crowds. For the trailhead, basically go in the direction opposite to everyone else :D Then turn right on a small side street called Pollatweg. Once at Neuschwanstein, I took a few pics outside the castle and then walked back towards the Pollat Gorge trail end towards Marienbrucke. The Tegelberg hike starts on the other side of the bridge. So go to the bridge, take pics and appreciate the view, and then continue on to Tegelberg. On the way to Marienbrucke, there was another vista point from where Hohenschwangau and two nearby lakes were visible. Quite a beautiful view.

For the Tegelberg hike, make sure you keep following the trail. It is clearly marked with red/blue paint as well. There are a couple of points along the trail where there seems to be a fork. So be careful at these points. I saw so many paragliders from the trail, made the hike even more memorable! It’s almost a completely uphill walk, though not very steep at any point. It took me about 3.5 hrs from Marienbrucke, although the sign there says 3 hours. Don’t miss the wildflowers on the way! I then took the Tegelbahn down (11.5 euros per person). There is a restaurant at the top but it was closed when I reached even though it wasn’t 5 pm. The ride in the Tegelbahn also offered great views and angles which I didn’t have from the trail. From the Tegelbahn station down below, take bus 78 back to Fussen.

The Tegelberg is very nice but an even better way to get a taste of the Alps experience is to walk from the Tegelberg to Neuschwanstein Castle. It is about 20 kms and all downhill! Take one of the excellent walking paths from the Tegelberg in the direction of the Berggasthaus Bleckenau (a former hunting lodge for King Ludwig) and stop for a nice lunch. Continue on in the direction to Neuschwanstein Castle (also sign posted as Maria's Bridge) which takes you the back way to the Castle. Continue down the hill to the Alpsee (which looks like a film set) and have a look around the town and visit the museums. This walk took us in total about 5 hours but we took out time. We saw barely any people (before we got to the castle that is) and it was just magical.

Unfortunately I can not write a review about the view from the top. After wating for more than fifteen minutes in a line to buy the tickets to go up, we were informed by a very unfriendly gentleman that payment (almost 40€ for two adults) had to be done in cash or in "german cards". I never heard that credit or debit cards had nationalities...but this and the lack of a near ATM made it impossible to go up and now write a review about the view.

We took the Tegelbergbahn cable car up to the top of Mount Tegelerg and really enjoyed our entire experience here.
The cable cars run about every 10 mins during the day - during our visit there were only 2 running, one is going up while the other is coming down.
The panoramic views of the surrounding area is spectacular...you can see the areas lakes, towns, and castles as well as the nearby mountains and alps.
Watching the hang gliders prepare and lift off from up there is really fun and we also enjoyed watching them soar around like birds - we counted over 10 in the air at the same time while we were up there.
We hiked the Konigsrunde am Teleberg trail while at the top of the mountain and were rewarded with some incredible views to the back/side of the mountain, looking towards France, Austria, and the Swiss Alps. The hike itself was well marked. It took about 30 minutes each way along a gravel, rocky, and steadily ascending/descending path.
And before taking the cable car down we enjoyed a very nice lunch in the restaurant.
We had a beautiful clear, hot, sunny day during our visit and it was so enjoyable and worthwhile.....you don't want to miss out on this!

So much fun for our whole family! Don't miss your chance if you are visiting Neuschwanstein and have time for a little detour.

TIP: If you are staying in a hotel in Fussen, ask for the Fussen Card. It allows for free public transit, 4 hours of free parking, many free wifi hot spots, discounts to attractions (one Euro off Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein Castles).

Our family loves inner tubes and luges. After trying the luge on the Great Wall in China, we were excited to hear about a luge in Schwangau. After visiting Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein Castles, we hopped back on bus 78 and headed for Tegelberg (10 minute bus ride). Kids ages 3-7 must ride with an adult paid ticket, kids ages 8-15 can ride solo (3 Euros for one ride, 13.5 Euros for 6 rides which can be shared), and adults or kids age 16+ pay 4.5 Euros for one ride, 19 Euros for 6 rides which can be shared. I was timid on the first ride and went fairly slow. By my fourth ride, I was a speed demon! My whole family (2 adults with 2 kids, ages 15 and 11) had great fun for 2 hours! Since the luge is pulled uphill on a track (like a ground-bound ski lift), while riding the luge, we enjoyed views of the Neuschwanstein Castle and the hang gliders overhead.
