Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Forggensee is a wonderful piece of nature. The waters, the trees, the views, it felt so peaceful sitting here! You can also walk around the lake. It took about 80 minutes in total, depending on whether you walk slow or fast of course. Overall a wonderful place to get a clear mind.

Large clear lake with lots of facilities around it. We stayed in Fussen & could acces the lake from the shore near our hotel. There are bathing areas & boating areas & walks around the lake.

We somewhat inadvertantly cycled around this whole lake and were so surprised at the varied activities and terrain around this one lake.
There is a paved bicycle path for probably 95% of the way (the rest of the time you are on a gravel/dirt path). This bicycle path doesn't run along the lakeside for much of the way - it instead trails off into the countryside at several points as well as through some charming villages, residential, and camping areas. There are some opportunities/areas to go swimming while you cycle, these were mostly on the west side of the lake.
We saw a small marina of sailboats, as well as a large touring boat carrying people around and across the lake.
If you are wanting to do a full ride around Forggensee, beware the bicycle trail is not very well marked so be sure to take a map along. It took us about 4.5 hours to cycle the whole way around the lake - and we are in pretty good shape but are not avid cyclists.
Afterwards we wished we had dedicated a full day to enjoy this activity more leisurely and to enjoy the countryside more fully.....so be sure to plan your time accordingly and be well prepared.

Alice Springs in Central Australia has the Todd River running through its centre. Every year they hold the Todd River boat race. As the Todd River is generally bone dry, this requires rowers to use their legs rather than their arms for propulsion, with legs protruding through the bottom of the boats.
If you are thinking of taking a cruise on Lake Forggensee on the MS Fussen, make sure you wear your running shoes and prepare yourself for some vigorous activity. Remove all thoughts of gently lapping water, water birds and views of lakeside castles. Put your seasickness tablets away.
Lake Forggensee Is the fifth largest lake in Bavaria with a surface area of 15.2 sq kms but it is dry in the Autumn and Winter months as the water is used to generate hydroelectric power. There is a dam at the Northern end of the lake which has sprung a leak without a Dutch boy’s finger in sight. Last year, the powers that be, decided not to totally fill the lake with the snow melt from the mountains so they could repair the dam. As a consequence the normal lake cruising season of early May to mid October was drastically shortened so when we visited the lake in mid September the cruise ship was high and dry. Our attempt to crew the ship with 50 able runners failed as did our cruise on the lake.
I’m sure it makes for a delightful day’s cruising when there is water in the lake.

We are here right now. Still no lake. No lake. Dried up. Could have been nice. Also would have been nice to know or have some offer of a free meal or discount... nothing

15mins drive from Neuschwanstein castle is Forggensee, we stopped by the area with free parking space where there were many house-on-wheels parked either temporarily or permanently. then stayed on one of the benches while waiting for the sunset, you can see the castle from a distance, people do fishing, swimming and boating around the lake.

What a wonderful afternoon spent cycling around the lake on the paths signposted.
Not for the faint hearted though - I would suggest average people rent an eBike to make it less painful. It’s not as easy as you think - not flat and seldom actually close to the lake.
Beautiful scenery though - well worth an afternoon - took me 4 hours and I got some nice photos.

We stayed at a hotel near this lake and unfortunately, it has been drained unless the dam has been repaired. The area is pretty and you are able to walk on the lake bed with the river running through it (very shallow).

We went in June 2018 and there was no lake! It had dried up completely. Ask a local before deciding to visit.

After the dam repairs in summer 2018, will there be water in the lake this coming summer or is it still drained/dry?

Is it permitted to swim in the water? We do triathlon and we are looking for a place to train in open water or a pool. Is it safe?

Ciao! Grazie!
