Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We ended up here as a result of having to change our trip due to the cyclone hitting NZ. What a great choice!! An absolutely beautiful beach that goes forever. Great for walking. Not crowded. Lots of kite sailing overhead. I would say a must go to beach.

Kariotahi beach is at the base of Awhitu Peninsula, on the Auckland, Waikato border. It has black sands backed by tall sandstone cliffs. There is a surf life saver club and the beach is patrolled. The surf varies from large to huge. This would have been an idyllic west coast beach if it weren't for the incessant roar of motorbikes up and down the beach. In competition are the 4WD vehicles. All make for a rather unpleasant experience. Most NZ beaches are also considered legal roads. I would like to see the council impose a low speed limit (as they have done in Auckland city) to protect the wildlife and beachgoers.

Castaways, wow what a getaway, memories from the past training racehorses as a youngster, on the beach, had to return, booked for a getaway at castaways for our 29th anniversary! Sophie was super helpfull and took into consideration what was important even though their were no pamper packages avail, she went the extra mile to fulfill what was important! Thanks! we discovered on arrival no fresh milk,. and coffee limited which was quickly supplied on request, thanks! The views AMAZING! total recharge for the soul! Restaurant nice but a bit on the small side portion wise, drinks a bit on the expensive side given the local beers & wines avail, staff lovely.
A very NZ experience! Highly recommend.

Even in mid winter was a beaut visit, I swam, helped a vehicle get out from being stuck in the sand and spoke to dog owners walking the doors.

We drove to Kariotahi beach after visiting Manakau Heads lighthouse and had wonderful time enjoying the vast expanse of black sand beach. My grandchildren 7 and 4 had a great time getting covered in sand and making black sandcastles, followed by splashing in the waves. We drove along the beach from the entrance and avoided the crowds who were camped by the safe swimming area and found a good spot to sit just by the cliffs and little waterfall. I waited at the bottom of the cliffs while the children and their parents climbed to the top.

We left when the noise from racing motorbikes and quad bikes became troublesome, but had a great time during the afternoon.

It was beautiful weather the days we were at this beach. Flat, calm and lots of activity. People getting ready to fish, some swimming and others walking dogs, horses or driving around in their cars. Black sand with very high cliffs so able to watch people kite surfing off the cliffs. The west coast can be wild which is also very invigorating but we were there when the weather was calm and beautiful. We loved our walk along the beach. Easy to get parking and lots of places to sit and enjoy the view.

Glorious views if you are prepared to ruse early. The black sand beach us like no other I have seen anywhere in the world. Lovers of horse riding must think they are in heaven - cantering along the miles of deserted beach in the surf with the sun on their backs. What's not to like?

Was ok to go for a wander on, but in the weekends there are lots of cars and off-road motorcycles racing up & down, so quite noisy.
