Skiing is ok and can be great but the resort suffers badly overall as it doesn’t link well across the mountain. Many bottlenecks create huge queues and busy slopes that result in a poor experience. You can find quieter areas but then you limit yourself to a small section of the mountain.
Not enough coffee shops across the mountain and expensive even though it is France.
At the bottom of the main area in Bergers it’s like Skegness on the slopes. Cooked food smells everywhere, 100’s of people everywhere, just not enjoyable.
Other sections of the resort are more picturesque but whatever you do or wherever you stay, you still end up in the Bergers area multiple times, it’s unavoidable due to the layout.
Feels to me like the resort is living on borrowed time and is in desperate need of a refurb and investment to make the area flow better.
In 15 years of skiing across many geographies, this is by far the worst place I’ve been. Wouldn’t recommend nor would I go back.

A fan of this magnificent resort for several years already, but disgusted by the endless queues this year, as well as the slopes saturated with people. We "allowed" ourselves the white peak once during the week, while the rest of the time we stayed in the small, lower stations to have less waiting time. Starting from Auris around 9:30 a.m., we arrived at the summit of the White Peak at 12:20 p.m. Around 1h20 of waiting just for the 3rd section! irrational and completely out of line with the purchase price of the package. Half a day to be able to do the sarenne, we walk on our heads! When will there be a limitation on the number of packages awarded, such as tickets to amusement parks... or a partial refund system if the waiting time exceeds a certain period? We feel cheated by the purchase price and the little time spent actually skiing!

Bonjour.

We had the wonderful idea of going skiing on Friday March 29 at Alpe d'Huez with colleagues. We therefore took 3 packages on the website the evening before for €62 each. The same morning at 9:30 a.m. a colleague went to buy his pass on site and it was our surprise when we learned that he had only paid €31 due to a "storm". After asking at the checkout, no one wanted to understand that it is not normal to pay double the price within a few hours, no compensation was possible and the only solution offered was to make a request on the site. One ski run later, it is now 11 a.m. and all the ski lifts are closed because of this so-called storm. So we made a refund request online hoping to get a full refund for this disastrous day. Hoping that the displayed processing time of 3 months is an error since I do not see how it is possible to process requests with such a long delay.
To summarize, Alpe d'Huez collects everyone between 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. and once they have reached their number, they close all the slopes.
PS: We never saw the shadow of a storm and even got sunburned because the weather was so nice.

Bonjour,

At 9:30 a.m. the “télévillage” lift (Huez 1500) was closed.
The lift employee told us that we should get back to the road and take a bus back to the center of the lift.
station.
We waited for the bus at 12:50 a.m.
When they arrived, the bus was crowded and many people could not get on the bus.
In our case, it took us 1h45 to make the trip Huez 1500 -> Alpe d'Huez center.
For this damage, we requested compensation.
We were "generously" granted a credit of €24 for the 3 people who were victims of this incident, while the price of the
day package is €62.
This credit was valid for a few months.
As we did not use this credit during the validity period, we requested an extension.
This extension was refused to us!!!
This is unacceptable.

Bonjour,

The resort is not bad however certain things let it down. First thing is the lift queues, every main lift on the resort seems to have a long queue all day everyday. Our hotel was next to Marmottes 1 which is a modern style lift however there was always a long queue for this no matter the time of day. The best idea is to head up this lift then head over to the other side of the resort toward the bottom of L'alpette and then back up this lift and Rousses as this gives you the longest run without having to use a lift. It also drops you off at the top of some really good and quiet red runs. The lifts don't match up well and it becomes stop/start the whole time. Our group was mostly advanced with some intermediate ski/snowboarders and while the slopes are fun, they did lack a real challenge (Tunnel aside). The piste ratings seem a little off, the greens are often blue level, blues could be reds. The reds are accurate and I'd say most of the blacks were red or had very small black sections then were red/blue. The piste map makes it look like there is decent separate areas for beginners/advanced but you always seem to end up on a beginner slope no matter where you aim for. This review sounds more negative than intended, it is a fun resort with some good long runs when you get to them but some small elements let it down.

Hi Ross and thanks for your comment.
The ski lift company works on the queue problem and our lifts are replaced by more performing lifts years after years.
Those who love incredibly long ski runs won’t be disappointed with the 5 itineraries on offer that add up to 10,000 m of vertical drop : la Sarenne (1 830 metres), Huez (1 880 metres), l’Enversin d’Oz (2 205 metres), la Villette (2 035 metres) et Oz-en-Oisans (2 000 metres).
The counter displays 17 black runs including legendary itineraries like the 16 km long ‘Sarenne’ and the ‘Tunnel’ run which cuts through the mountain to come to one of the steepest ‘walls’ in French skiing with a 35 degree inclination.

This resort benefits from a very beautiful ski area. Having frequented it a lot about ten years ago, I had very good memories of it. The problem is that it has not been able to manage the ever-increasing number of vacationers who frequent it. No feedback, no structure was created to deal with it. In the end, a catastrophic result, endless hours of waiting to climb to the white peak and only making a descent. You can certainly fall back on Auris, Oz or Vaujany to ski with less waiting, but you haven't paid a high package (€309 for 6 days) for that. Not to mention military and authoritarian management of lift closures. We had waited 20 minutes to go up to the Sarenne of DMC 2 and at 3:40 p.m., the ski lift staff denied us access by placing a barrier right in front of us in a completely arbitrary manner, without care and possible discussion while the last lift was supposed to take place at 4 p.m. Livestock would have been treated better. In short, a resort to avoid, especially during school holidays, and apparently, given the construction in the village, the situation is not about to improve. By focusing on the financial and mercantile side, this resort has lost its soul.

La station change en effet. Voilà 30 ans que peu de travaux avait été faits. Nous nous modernisons et proposons une offre plus variée. Les remontées mécaniques évoluent également. Par contre les vacances scolaires resteront le moment où l'affluence est la plus grande.

We went in March 2023 when the season snow was not great. Luckily the resort and slopes are quite high so we could still ski/snowboard. Overall good lifts, multiple ways to get up on the slopes and ski in/out locations. The slopes had a good range for all abilities and had a good park. The resort had a good amount of facilities as well.

Pros:
Lots of après ski activities: nice restaurants, bars, sports, swimming pools...
Few ski lifts,
Some mythical tracks (Tunnel, Sarenne...),
Incredible view,
Very accessible but...
Cons:
...very largely undersized compared to the number of beds - complete saturation during school periods, victim of its success and the multiplication of real estate projects in recent years (a huge one is planned in place of a car park in the Shepherds),
Low of the area quite arbitrary for good skiers,
Sun exposure unfortunately has become a handicap nowadays,
Too exposed to the wind and pretty fast closures of even the smallest lifts, I've never seen that elsewhere,
Endless waits (minimum 35 minutes down to the shepherds at 1800m outside meal period 12:15-13:30) without any intervention of the people at the lifts to try to get the dumpsters full (except on Marmots 1, the girls pressed and helped people),
I was able to do Sarenne and Tunnel only in very bad weather and at 1pm otherwise it is minimum 1h waiting,
I've never waited so long for the lifts yet I've been going every year during school for 10 years, even to the middlemen, everything is saturated and it plays elbows,
No queue for single people to save time and complete the skips, incomprehensible to me a lot of stations do,
Liaison with Auris from another age, but we're at least walking,
We quickly went around the slopes in fact because most of the area is very low and or difficult to access from the view of the waiting time at the lifts,
Drunk guys coming down to the beginners' slopes right after ski school...
And things I've never seen anywhere else:
bouncers present at the closure of the lifts at the bottom to allow to quietly close the lift 10 minutes before the indicated time (true!). I saw in particular a person who did not speak French who wanted to take Rifnel to gain 10 minutes of walking after picking up his daughter from the ski course => refused by an ice cabinet at the entrance of the Rifnel. "You just walk" he said. Well, that's cool. You know, we have to close the lift on time, not another minute. Daddy came home with his 8-year-old daughter... well, on foot. Beautiful picture of the resort for this tourist!
I specify that I already knew the resort (last stay 15 years ago) outside school periods...
I won't be back soon!

This is a decent ski resort. Having visited numerous others in the Alps, thus has to be the most touristic one by far. Skiing is good and there was a lot if effort to keep everything open despite the lack of decent amount of snow. Food places are offering the same kind if food, which is rather expensive for what it is.

Great summer location with plenty of activities but our stay was seriously haunted by noise from the street during the night time. Music, yelling took place every day from 10PM until 3/4 AM and caused normal sleep to be more or less impossible .
And nobody did anything about it!!!
France has very strict laws about anormal behaviour in the outside and I am writing this review in the hope that the responsible parties will make a serious effort to ensure that conditions improve.

Ski pass refund? Did anyone manage to get a refund? I was surprised last week by the staff at Vaujany, (part of Alpe d’Huez area) lift pass office, who told me there would be ‘no refunds’. I’d purchased a 6 day ‘whole area’ pass for 250 euros, but high winds had closed 95% of the ski area. They did manage to open a tiny ‘Beginner areas’ close to Vaujany village but this would disappoint a competent skier in a very short space of time. As in the U.K. I believe France has a consumer law which states that any business must supply the product or service advertised? The lift operators did not supply the service I had paid for and I was told by the station staff that it is not our fault as we do not control the weather! They did suggest I raise a complaint saying that if enough people complain maybe the management would review their refund policy! I did follow this advise but it is now several days later and I have not even had an acknowledgment email? This leads me to the conclusion that they do not treat their customers fairly and sooner or later they will regret this tawdriness. I will certainly warn anyone I speak to that Alpe d’Huez should be avoided. Had I been offered an immediate refund of this missed day, I would have been much more positive about this resort.
I also believe that major ‘closures’ due to high winds will be a prevailing issue for this resort as the key routes up the mountain are large cable cars. The main lift out of Vaujany is the size of a single decker bus and this will obviously be blown about and stopped well before any chair lift would.

Can you please tell me how long in distance and time to ski the green runs are, although I can ski I am green to blue only and like long motorway type runs. Thankyou
Written 17 February 2019
In Alpe d'huez area itself there is Marcels farm, chez Roger that are straight forward. Chez Roger gives two options. There are also several other green runs taking two to five minutes. The blues from Marmotte 2 and up to pic blamc will take longer and there are nice ong blue runs down to neighbouring Os and Villiard. Easy motorway green run from top pf Vaujany lift. If you do take the chair to Auros the blues can be icy as the sun isn't on them.

Hi, are you allowed to carry your snowboard on the chair lifts or do you have to have your foot strapped in? Thank you.
Written 2 April 2018
I always went with one foot strapped. Didn't actually think much more than that, but people do ride the lifts with no boards or skis too, so not sure if its a rule.
I dont see why you would want it off anyway. 4 people on a chair lift with four boards? not sure where you would put them all and it wont be very comfortable.
As mentioned there are gondolas so if you dont feel comfortable with a board on your foot go for that option.

Alpe De Huez 1850 is where you want to stay! Anywhere near the main DMC lift as that is right by the ski school.
