The best 1.50 euro I have spent in a long time! Eichswald is a cracking area to visit and their wurst is unparalleled- visit the Wurstmuseum Probably worth coming on a festival day but we enjoyed the hike and the exploration

This fortress was once in the former east Germany and an unknown attraction for the west. Since the unification of Germany both this ruin and the nearby Ludwigstein are both well worth visiting in a day. The main attraction here is the climb up a narrow winding staircase to the top of the tower. The panoramic view of the idyllic country side is breathtaking. There is a small cafe at the entrance of the parking lot for a local dish of waffles with fresh strawberries and cream.

This little ruin of a middle age castle is well worth a visit and a well known attraction among locals, while quite unknown to tourists. It lies within beautiful surroundings and offers stunning views over the countryside. You can climb the castle tower (the long set of stairs is very narrow and can cause some claustrophobia, but gives a real adventurous feeling). From the Castle, called Burg Hanstein in German, you can do several nice hiking excursions, including to the nearby "Teufelskanzel", a small mountain (on a rock) that offers great views over the Werra valley.

A great castle to visit and view, that you won't find on the map! Entrance for the cheap price of only 2.50 Euro. Well worth the money. Partially restored, and partially in ruins. Compares well with other great ruined castles I've seen, like Chepstow, Corfe, and Kenilworth in the UK. A great time climbing up the tower and seeing all the nooks and crannies of the ruins. A medieval market was going on in the inner bailey when I was there. Great views from the towers. A wonderful place to spend the day. Also close by to Ludwigstein Castle, where you can stay in a youth hostile and hike over. Highly recommended for castle enthusiasts.
