During our driving tour of Nouvelle Aquitaine we drove into Saintes to find the Roman archaeological site and wow!! when we got there it was stunning. We parked on the roadside and spent many hours just walking around this huge amphitheatre and sitting as they...More

Well preserved and presented, this Roman building gives a good flavour of how it looked originally. You can't look at it without thinking of all the blood and misery that was represented as entertainment in those days and in this place.

To me an unexpected reminder of how dominant Roman culture was in much of France (and not just in Gallia Narbonensis).

Simply the Ruins of a large Roman Amphitheater, no real attempt to give it mass appeal or visual interpretations and probably all the better for that. Lovely stroll through the city to find these ruins.

Used to come here annually when my son was little. He’d talk from the middle of the theatre and it could be heard at the top 20 years later this place is just as amazing. A must visit for all in the area. Modest entrance...More

Impressively large amphitheatre forms in a volley about 15 minutes walk from the centre of Saintes. A modest entry fee -4 euros. Plenary of information including in English. Rather a gruesome roman pastime watching slaves, felonies and gladiators put to death. Perhaps some light relief...More

My first visit although have lived near by for 12 years, a very interesting place. Very well preserved, you can imagine what went on all those years ago. A small cafe on site, which makes a very good cup of coffee, the staff are very...More

This is definite recommendation if you are in the area of Saintes. It's one of the most complete amphitheatres you are likely to find and it's easy to park outside the ticket office or to walk from the town. There's enough standing to see exactly...More

This must be top of the list of sights to see if you are anywhere near Saintes. Very atmospheric ! You can almost sense the gladiators waiting to come out to fight! Admission only 4€ per person - audio guides extra. Highly recommended

We walked there from our accommodation so not sure about parking. The views of the amphitheatre can be seen from the highest point near the entrance so no need to climb. Good pathways.
