Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is the most disorganised port ever. Nobody knows where to drive, there are no queue directions provided, no indications at all. All the drivers were confused and angry but port staff did nothing about it. The trip on ferry is one and a half hour long, the queue for border check is 2 hours.

I was there during a Eurotunnel strike, so many people were there and the situation was out of control. There were two people as far as I could see who were sending people to various queues, but the problem is that they weren't really queues and there ended up being more lines than check-in desks. Passengers were getting so aggressive and fights were breaking out, but rather than trying to sort out the mess they caused, the people who were in charge of organising the lines, just disappeared.

Passengers were trying to get people to straighten out as Irish Ferries passengers were jammed between P and O Ferry lines which were not moving.

After all that ridiculous mess, we went through check in to find that the same chaos went on to get to passport control.

The queues for UK passport controls are appalling 3+ hours and no staff to prioritise cars with earlier ferries. Many of us missed our 1:25 am sailing with PO. Next sailing 5 am. All shops closed. I will never use Calais again

Calais Port Authority has invested a lot of money in infrastructure and modernisation. Someone should mention to them that they have got it catastrophically wrong. Frustrating and annoying are only two adjectives to describe the experience that is CALAIS PORT ,many more adjectives, but I can't print them. Whoever planned the new system of roadways must have lost the plot part way the design through but still had the front to actually make it a reality. My granddaughter drew like this when she was 2 years old. Be aware that the 'recommended hour check-in before departure' could be 3+ hours, if you're lucky. I think I used more fuel driving around CALAIS PORT than I had over the previous 4 hours of Autoroute driving. So when you plan your expenses for crossing the Channel factor in the cost of an extra half a tank of fuel and if you run an all electric car, make sure it's got plenty of battery life left, didn't see many charging points in the port. It can only get...!

Absolutly dreadful
3 hours to get through
1 hr to get through p&o ferry que and hour get through french customs and an hour to get through boarder custom.
I allowed 90 time and coming from uk took 45 mins, but clearly missed my ferry then put onto a delayed ferry.
What is the hold up????
I go to france every year, and since the new ferry port its like staff are on a go slow.
Uk to france took 45 mins
But france to uk 3 hours
Then once your finally through there is 1 toilet in for 1000000s of people which stinks and no toilet paper.
Shocked at how things have gotten with the ferry port

I recently travelled back home from France by ferry and used the port facilities. The facilities that this port offers are disgusting. Toilets with no toilet roll in them. Dirty paper all over the floor. Advertising food & drink and all machines empty or out of order. Take a leaf out of dovers book and get a proper facility with shops and restaurants.

We walked to the terminal from the station. Google maps directs you to the original terminal despite the fact there is a new terminal. There are zero signs to inform you of this and absolutely nobody in the old building to let you know. When you finally complete the 25 minute (additional) walk to the new terminal, there are no shops/cafe’s at all. All you have is two vending machines which are rubbish.

2nd time through this new complex and believe me it doesn’t get any easier. French appear not bothered who leaves where as the UK border control think everyone has a stow away somewhere in there vehicle. The signage to navigate to the parking lanes for the ferries is to small and to high very hard to see in the dark as well as trying to negotiate many turns.
Give yourself at least 1 hour for your check in.
Good Luck. It was far easier when the old port layout was in use, they call it progress I think.

British passport control was poor. Some lanes fine but others were closed half way through, people won’t let you in to new lane and a trainee on our lane which made it extra slow. Arrive 2 hours before your ferry and expect a long queue.

This is a new huge complex with hardly any help from staff. We missed our ferry despite being through all formalities. The journey by road is easy enough. It is when you get there that the problems start. The signage to the booths is confusing and flashing all the time. You have to find the booth of your specific ferry operator. Tickets are checked and then you have French Passport Control, British Passport Control, a customs shed and even inspections by random staff after you have passed through. We had to open the boot of the car on 2 occasions but the officials seemed more interested in how fast the car would go rather than any contraband. After all this the signage continued to be very poor, high on a gantry and small lettering. We missed the signs for our Ferry Lane and after trying to negotiate the one way system ended up on the way out which meant a 10 mile motorway journey to turn round. We then had to go through all the formalities again. I thought that outgoing and incoming passengers had to be strictly separated. Anyway we missed our ferry but the DFDS staff were very helpful and put us on the next 2 hours later. The problems are bad signs and the vast nature of the terminal. So keep you wits about you in this terminal. We could not find any food for sale but there is a large and well stocked Duty Free shop at reasonable prices.
