The Citadel has many buildings within it's perimeter that are abandoned and derelict. As you enter through the main entrance archway, on the left hand side there is a Salon de Famille which houses lots of information about the complex and its history in French...More

About a half hour stroll or No.9 bus from the centre of town....imposing entrance with bridge over the surrounding moat...only one map of the site...easily missed in the darkened area of the entrance tunnel....large cobbled parade ground...mixture of interesting old buildings but no explanations....some hints...More

Take a step back in time! Wonderful French architecture and cobble stone roads. The chapel is beautiful and still in use. The surrounding woods have some great walks with pockets of history all over. Especially the Mur des Fusilles which pays tribute to the 218...More

This UNESCO site was a real disappointment. The Citadel was built by Vauban around 1672 but was never really used. There is no interpretive center or anything describing it's history. The church is very basic and the buildings now house City Offices. The large parade...More

A huge space and interesting buildingsincluding a very moving chapel. Scope for some English on some of the boards but maybe I should improve my French.

As mentioned in other TA posts, this attraction is not well-labeled or indicated. We had stopped in at city hall before going there. I noticed a book about the citadel for 10 euros. I remembered other TA reviews stating that the Citadel was not well...More

This huge military (Napoleonic?) complex is a popular place to take a picnic or exercise for locals, when I went on a Sunday us casual strollers were well outnumbered by runners, cyclists, speed walkers etc. There's a running track, and the huge central parade ground...More

As reflected in other reviews, the site is imposing and impressive. There is however no guidance or interpretation on the site. We relied on what little information we could scare up from 3rd party sources on the Internet using our mobile phones . The site...More

I was surprised by the way in which the autorities form Arras combined the history of their city with the beauty of it. The Citadel is a very nice combination of a museum and a bothanical garden
