- BOXtheFOX7,993 contributionsBeautiful Vannes. We spent 6 nights in Vannes. What a wonderful place to visit. To stroll through the pretty cobbled streets and see the beautiful buildings. Lots of independent shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. Then walk down to the port area. A great day to visit is on a Wednesday or Saturday, when the market takes over several streets in the town. Clothes, fruit and vegetables, flowers etc. Really busy and very nice. When we were there on the 21st June, there was a music festival taking place. Music on every corner, lots of group dancing, everybody having a great time. You can also take a walk along the port to the enclosed Gulf of Morbihan. Maybe take a bus trip from the bus station at Place Liberation to one of the nearby towns or from the main train station.Visited June 2023Written 28 June 2023

- George SMiami Beach, Florida1,107 contributionsNice medieval townWe stayed eight days in this nicely preserved medieval town in the historical center right next to the Cathedral. It is very scenic with its cobblestoned streets, half-timbered houses and some period architecture. The cathedral is interesting as well as the town walls, ramparts and the former moat. There are plenty of restaurants, cafes and shops and a great market on Saturday. The historic center is about 15 minutes from the train station and it served as our camp in discovering the Golfe du Morbihan and towns such as Carnac, Auray and Quimper.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 October 2023

Beautiful gardens, old half timbered houses, cobblestone streets. Lots of boutique shops. We visited during May and happened to see a flower show in the gardens outside the city wall. Beautiful background of the ramparts and ancient walls. The only drawback is the public restrooms behind the tourist information center is dirty and doesn’t have any toilet paper!

The town within the old walls of Vannes is pretty and interesting. Of course the shopping is I would suspect is slightly more expensive that the normal high street. Definitely worth a visit and to the Cathedral too.

Beautifully restored buildings giving you a real feel for how it may have been in the past. You can imagine the claustrophic Hustle and bustle of the old City with its smells and noise.

Had a great few hours wandering around the old city area of Vannes. Please see my pictures for a better idea of what I am talking about.
Lots of quaint buildings, with plenty of cafes to have a coffee or an ice cream.
Fairly flat so good for all ages.
Quite a few tourists, but not overrun like Venice.

Main central area of Vannes is the original walled town centre with medieval architecture. This is also a more upmarket town centre of Britanny with the associated interesting shops including local art and products. Huge number of cafes and restaurants to choose from in this area ..but like most places in France ..book if there is somewhere specific you fancy because they all get very busy in summer months. Must see area for any visit to Vannes. Lots of public car parks in area (best is the underground Port car park ..€10 plus for the day)..well signed as you follow town centre signs.

A lovely experience of typical historic french buildings and old Town Centre that have not been spoilt/damaged by time and war! The old Rampaerrts are fascinating and nearly complete despite the ages.

Open Sunday's?

Like most cities in France, some "boutiques" might be opened on Sunday mornings. However except days before Christmas, during the sale seasons (twice a year) and may be in the middle of summer it is rest time.
