Baroque in Val di Noto
Sep 2021
Impressive main church of Ragusa Ibla, as many other Baroque churches in Val di Noto it follows the pattern of eye-catching exterior coupled with largely-understated interior (red coloring prevalent on the nave columns left me ambivalent as to whether the cathedral would look better without it). Well worth the visit!

Dominant Center Piece Of The Ancient Ragusa
Jul 2021
One of the few churches I have seen where I felt the exterior outshines the interior. This church dominates the landscape of the historic part of Ragusa. It sits at the up slope side of the duomo plaza so it makes its imposition even more profound.

While the interior is beautiful, it did not come across as majestic and awe inspiring. In fact, we found a few of the iconic images rather tacky. Even so, it is worth a visit to reflect on the history and religion of this area.

We ate in the duomo plaza area at night and the cathedral is a photographic center piece. The whole plaza is wonderfully lit at night so do not miss the evening experience.

Three Layer Wedding Cake

With its robust iron fencing and tall columns, it is an imposing Baroque structure when seen from below in Piazza Duomo.

The interior contains beautiful art and stained glass windows.

Don't miss it at night with the delicate lights on !

A beautiful barocco building. We visited it in the morning, but it is still more majestuous at night. Good spot for a photo on top of it !

Amazing church with curtains
Aug 2020
This church is one of a kind. It dominates the square. Inside you will see the only church having curtains hanged between the columns. You can also have a small tour if the old church destroyed after earthquake.

Old town cathedral
Sep 2020
Very beautiful, and we were lucky to have a quick glimpse, before it closed for a wedding ceremony. Very picturesque view from the stairway.

Enjoy the Outside
Sep 2020
Enjoy the impressive view of the Duomo while having a drink or coffee in one the bars in front of it. The interior of the Duomo in neighbouring Modica was more impressive.

Beautiful church
Sep 2019
A beautiful church set slightly at an angle at the top of a large flight of stairs overlooking a small square. It was built in the C18th after the original cathedral in another part of the town was destroyed in an earthquake. The dome can be seen for miles around and it beautifully lit at night - we were lucky enough to be staying in a B&B nearby. It is surrounded by high iron railings at the front which were shut when we went to look around but a door was open on the street to the right. Open 10 -12.30 and again 4-7. For those who enjoy watching the Inspector Montalbano series, you will recognise this church form the shows.

The ancient side of Ragusa city is IBLA, this is the wonderful Cathedral of San Giorgio. In this place are filmed many parts of the movie "Il Commissario Montalbano" .

Lovely church
Dec 2019
The Duomo is a lovely church that appears to stand guard over the town of Ragusa Ibla. it is the centerpiece of the main piazza so you can't miss it. You should also climb the hills to have an overview of the church and a beautiful view.
