We stopped here as part of a private tour of the area. That way it was no trouble to get there but just to get out of the car and listen to what our driver told us about the history of the area. It is...More

This was a great spot for a dog walk around the lake (very full after the recent rains), and a delicious traditional lunch in le cantine. Drop off the Tangenziale Lago d'Averno exit, head uphill on the SP303 towards Cuma and take the left immediately...More

Vergil wrote the entrance to the underworld was here, but now it's a place where locals go for a nice jog in the evenings. I'm was a local (until I moved), so I loved this place for getting exercise or going for a stroll with...More

When you read that Vergil wrote the entrance to the underworld was here, and that birds would drop dead flying over the lake, you expect something hellish. Alas, that was long ago. Today, it is just a smallish lake with ducks swimming in it and...More

Lago D'Averno is a lake where locals jog/bike/walk their dogs. (yes I'm one of those locals.) Yes the history is really cool, but unless you are there during the Land Art Exhibit not sure as a tourist you need to walk it. However, if you...More

It was an eerie feeling to look down from the road vista point at the lake considered by the ancients to be the entrance to hell. BUT, that said, it's just a lake and not that much to see. So if you have to make...More

This beautiful lagoon(?) formed by a volcanic caldera is very peaceful. It is a good place to take a picture especially from above. Unless you stop at a cafe, it won't take long.z

The best part of this attraction ya not really the lake, but roaming the streets and hills of Pozzouli. Have a simple lunch or dinner at one of trattorias or pizza bars. For dinner, remember this is Italy, so don't try to find dinner much...More

great for a few photo's, with the fantastic contrast between the lake and the sea, the vivid green vegetation and cultivations along the banks.

The main road to Naples passes high above this volcanic caldera, but there is only just enough space to pull in to get the best view. The lake is almost circular, a beautiful deep shade of blue - very photogenic.
