About
Offering some peace and quiet from the crowded Spiaggia Grande, Fornillo is a hidden gem that’s popular with the locals. The black pebble beach is around 984 feet long and is flanked by two towers at either end. You can reach Fornillo via a 10-minute walk from the main beach, or by descending hundreds of steps from the top of Positano. Plan ahead to visit during the Fish Festival, where there’s live music, dancing, a market selling fish cooked in all ways and a complimentary glass of wine for each visitor. – Tripadvisor

- W1240OUbretts1 contributionBeautiful way to soak in the sun and seaFornillo is no joke - those stones get hot and will burn your feet! Otherwise, this was a beautiful place to relax, sunbathe, swim in the sea, and enjoy the beauty of Positano without the chaos. We rented 4 loungers and 2 umbrellas for less than 80 E and enjoyed about 5 hours there before heading back to our water taxi for Praiano (gorgeous and way less chaotic than Positano).Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten 13 June 2023
- SHM26 contributionsBeautiful and private beachMuch quieter than Spiagga Grande with clearer water. We have 3 tips: 1. Have reef shoes as the rocks getting in and out of the water are tough 2. Be prepared to walk a lot of stairs to get here. 3. Head to the left where there are blue umbrellas, it’s smaller, quieter and cheaper beds to rent - €20 pp compared to €30 on the right side of the beach.Visited June 2023Written 5 July 2023
- Teresa EWolverhampton, United Kingdom59 contributionsLovely quiet beach just outside Positano (a town which is pretty, mad busy and very expensive!)When you arrive at the beautiful Positano you are struck by how busy and crammed it can be although it is very pretty. If you stand with the sea to your back, you will see a walkway up to left which takes you to a smaller bay Forniello. Lovely photo opportunities on the way. You can hire sun beds and the sea is lovely. The beach bar/shop just as you come down into the beach is awesome and great value for money. Light relief from crowds and being ripped off (€24 for 2 cokes in Positano is being ripped off in my book).Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 July 2023
- Kathleen SCairo, Egypt9 contributionsPretty beach that is less crowded than the main beach in PositanoVery pretty, smaller beach with less of a crowd in Positano. Bring beach shoes because the rocks will hurt your feet without them. If you are just going in the water for a quick dip, no need to spend money on beach chairs and umbrellas. Just put your towels on the rocks.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 July 2023
- Ida BSingapore, Singapore3 contributionsMore private Positano beachMuch nicer and more private beach. Run by a beach club, around 100€ for 4 ppl, spread over 2 sections, not too hard to find, can walk there. Beach is medium pebbles, water is cleaner and fewer people on the small section. When we were there, there were strong winds and we were flooded out of the place, but so was all of Positano beaches. If you’re coming from neighbouring towns and the ferry is cancelled I would not recommend taking bus, but of a nightmare.Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 31 July 2023
- Sanka1 🇱🇰🇬🇧Bicester, United Kingdom3,410 contributionsA must visitVisited on a Sunday afternoon and it was surprisingly quiet perhaps due to off season. The pebble beach and the views from ground level up is amazing and a must see if you're travelling around Amalfi coast. There are lots of steps to get down and recommend taking a bus when you go back up to street levels as it's quite a climb. Disappointed that most of the restaurants are closed off season.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 February 2024

Go to Fornillo to get away from the large crowds. These beaches need water shoes as they are rocky but fun to look for sea glass and other items. There are private little restaurants that are great food and spots to reserve a beach chair.

Just a 10-15 minute easy hike from the main Positano beach, this beach is less crowded by people and ships. Because of that, the water is clearer. There are still small beach clubs offering beach chairs and umbrellas, but also a larger free, public beach than in the maintown. I prefer this beach to the Positano Spiaggia

How do you get to Fornillo beach ? Do we need to make reservations or how does it work? Should we take a taxi to Fornillo beach ? Please explain. Thank you

You can easily reach Fornillo beach by walking the path above the port of Positano. You will see a path on the right past the ticket booths. Just follow that up and around and you will be at Fornillo beach in 5 min. It is a beautiful walk overlooking the water.
We did not make reservations and were able to get umbrellas and beach chairs in June. You may (?) need to get there early during the high season if you want a spot.

Thanks for your note about Fornillo Beach! Are there different places to rent lounge chairs, and do they provide towels or do we need to bring our own? Thanks!

There are at least two vendors for loungers and they are well positioned and easy to spot when you access the beach. There was a temporary kiosk that supplied towels and cushions during our visit but as we brought our own towels I can speak for the quality of the towels or their cost.
You will enjoy the beach and if you are based nearby I believe the hotels can get you a special deal on lounger, brolly and dining experience. Again we didn't take up the packages as we were based in Sorrento and just visiting for a few hours but those that were seemed very happy with their experience.

Ciao a tutti... A settembre andrò un giorno a Positano.. Volevo passare un paio di orette in spiaggia.. Volevo sapere se il comune mette a disposizione qualke doccia e spogliatoio o bisogna appoggiarsi a qualke lido. Grazie

Hi, do you happen to know where parking might be available?
Thanks!

Sorry about the response prior......someone asked about a restaurant in Rome...and I answered on your space...
Fornilla Beach is accessed by walking only. Since Positano has very limited space and even less roadways by cars....the best suggestion I have is go by ferry. Come from Sorrento....you have more parking there then you would ever have in Positano. Have a terrific boat ride.... get off....take the left concrete pathway that goes up after the ferry ticket booths...and that will take you directly to beach.
