There is a tall column with a statue of the protecting Saint Oronzo on top. In 1656, when the plague was killing over a million people in southern Italy, Otranto and Lecce were miraculously spared. In 1658 Bishop Oronzo officially replaced Saint Irene as Lecce’s...More

There are some nice shops in the vicinity- it's a huge square more or less in the center of the old town with many streets radiating off the square.

A Roman amphitheater, a MacDonalds in a quasi-Fascist-style building, a beautiful small church, and business offices flank this central are through which tourists and residents alike pass every day.

We had 5 days in Lecce and our B and B overlooked the Piazza Orono. Totally fascinating, both during the day and in the evenings. Always a buzz about the place, lots of nice bars and cafes, (and a MacDonalds - not quite so expected!)...More

In the midst of this very busy major square, we were stunned when loud speakers suddenly broadcast a famous Italian singer belting out Ave Maria. People paused and absorbed the beauty of the music. What a thoroughly European moment. Square boasts monuments, Roman theater remains.

It seemed like more of a busy crossroads than an elegant square. The Roman theater at one end was opposite a chain hamburger restaurant; people ignored the good statue of the saintly bishop that saved the town centuries ago.

We visited here as we had one and a half hours in Lecce. Very easy to locate and this was a very Lively place in the central of Lecce. The ruins in the heart of the piazza add to the ambience where you can see...More
