The outside of this palace is truly impressive - a testament to the power of architecture to declare status, and impose rule by the dominant family in the sixteenth century. Inside, however, the ground floor rooms are largely bare - there are detailed boards giving...More

Castello Estense sits in the centre of Ferrara. We enjoyed a complete guided tour and then visited the easily accessible tower for panoramic views. Highly recommended for a visit.

A terrific example of Italy's amazing medieval castle building. this fortress in the centre of Ferrara is well worth a visit. Some amazing frescoes on the ceilings. A fascinating insight into medieval jails. Great views over the city. Well worth a visit if in Ferrara.

This is a wonderful castle to visit - you can walk around the inner area free of charge, but it is certainly worth paying to see inside. The rooms are fabulous with ornate ceilings and helpful large mirrors so that you don't strain your neck!...More

Experience the dungeons, dark, claustrophobic, then feel the sunlight in the small garden with trees; further on see the frescos on the walls and ceilings. (There are mirrors so that you don't have to strain your neck.) Finally, have a wonderful view from the top...More

Marvelous inside and out - and a real moat! This is well worth the admission. The combined ticket in Ferrara is good value. It includes Several museums as well as the castle. Pinoteca, however, is disappointing- many shut rooms and a conference in progress in...More

What a hidden gem! This is a must-see when in Ferrara. The prison dungeons were very eerie. Lots of good information and history.

The Castello Estense is an imposing structure in the center of Ferrara. It has a moat as well as a drawbridge. This was some damage to the castle during the earthquake in 2012 and you can see where they having been patching up the structure....More
