- VTwelltravelledMiddlebury, Vermont568 contributionsIf you like hiking, you will love this - for me a highlight of my tripAs an avid hiker and geocacher, I knew I had to do this. Luckily in November it was cool and breezy so I zipped up in 35 minutes but it is steep!! I would not do this in summer on a hot day. Bring water!! and use the bathroom at the bottom as there are no facilities. Don't worry as you can climb up the first set of stairs and in about 15 minutes get a great view. if you are not a hiker, I would not go all the way to the castle as you can just do the ruins and temple which is much easier. I of course had to go up to the castle but more for a workout and to find all the geocaches. I wore sticky hiking shoes which I would recommend. I saw many people barely making it up in regular sneakers with bad grip. If you opt for this hike, wear actual grippy shoes for hiking, not flip flops. Great views from on top but again, don't feel bad as they first lookout is easier to get to and just as good. Great day - ended up spending 2 hours wandering around and geocaching but as a regular hiker, the ascent took 35 minutes, the down about 20-25. I did a few detours that added more time.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 12 November 2023
- Credoc144 contributionsOne of the highlights of my Sicily tripEntrance fee is 5 Euro (2024), cash preferred. If you just climb to the top and return, it can be done in about an hour. However, it well worth to explore the mountain, and spend there 2-3 hours, relaxing and admiring the views. Bring snacks and most importantly WATER with you.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 14 May 2024
- tromponya66 contributionsExcellent and affordable place to go without having to pay for a tour.A most excellent excursion which can be done on your own. Incredible vistas of coastlines all along the way to a man ancient castle. The cross which can be seen from all over Cefalù is one of the stops and quite easy to get to as there are lots of shaded spots to take a rest. The next leg up to the castle is more challenging but not as far as it looks and again attainable if u take your time. There are some slippery steep areas so be careful. Take three bottles of water per person and a snack. You will feel accomplishment and see views that are absolutely spectacular. 5€ to enter the park and you can enjoy a fresh fruit drink or smoothie back at the bottom when you’re done. Walking poles and sandals can be rented 5€ if you want them. Best to wear trail or hybrid runners. A map to walk up from anywhere in town can be found in your phone. Plan for 3 hrs round trip.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 May 2024
- ThomasKrabi Town, Thailand24 contributionsWorth it!Very beautiful hike and totally worth a visit when in Cefalu. No 5/5 because the staff at the entrance made us rent hiking sandals for €10. My wife had Birkenstocks and would be just fine to hike with them… but overall great experience.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 June 2024
- 301lisa33Coventry, United Kingdom2,012 contributionsGreat viewsThere is a small admission charge to ascend this rocky hill. It is quite a pull but the first section does have steps, the path is then over rough rocks. It is the home of at least one herd of goats. The hill offers excellent views over the old and new cities and to the east from some points. Allow at least 2 hours for your visit There are quite a number of archaeological remains to be explored, including a castle at the summitVisited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 August 2024
- Thelonewolf2020London, United Kingdom64 contributionsWell worth the effortWell worth the effort. It was not easy, it was hard, especially near the top but the views are superb and there is a real sense of walking through history. Advice (i) Wear tough shoes- its not all steps and rails- there are skiddy loose rock paths near the summit. (ii) Take water (iii) Go early- we were there and on our way by 9.0am. As we descended an hour later there was a queue of over 50 people waiting at the entrance.Visited October 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 1 October 2024

It opens at 8 in the morning 5 € fee and for paying the fee you need a mask. If you start early you will have the steepest parts in the shade both on the way up and down.
I recommend going to the highest point first (heat) and enjoy the view from there and also look at the nice flowers.
The first part is nice and easy steps, it gets worse the higher you get. But the path is well posted and you can get a lot of information on the walk.
Strongly recommend to move to the north from the cross, a very special view of the dome will reward you,
If you do it slowly and take your time and explore a lot it is 2-3 hours after which you will be soaked (in sweat) but happy.

Would really recommend doing this hike. Incredible views of the whole town of Cefalù. It is 5 euros per person and you need to pay with either €5 or €10 notes. Definitely do the hike in the morning as the heat can quickly make the hike feel a lot more arduous than it is.

We paid our 5 euros about noon, on a sunny day, first of April. They only take 5 or 10 Euro bills, nothing larger; or you have to use your credit card. The staff did not tell us but we learned you have to be out of the park by a certain time. You scan your ticket in and out so they know if someone is still up the mountain. The first half of the hike to the Diana level is all man made stairs. Be careful, some of the handrails offer no help. Great photos of Cefalu from the Diana level. If you head up the second half, you have complete 360° views. It is a great hike but the trail is now dirt and rocks. We had running shoes so it was okay. The view from the top was great. And then.... it rained. You could see it coming. There is no protection. We tried to linger under the olive trees. Even the mountain goats were heading down the mountain. The path got slippery on the wet rocks obviously. About 3/4 of the way down it was dry again. At the bottom at about 200pm, new customers were being turned away - told it was closed for the rest of the day which was a prudent move by the staff.

We went at opening time (8am) to avoid the heat of the day to climb the rock- this was a good idea and would recommend going early. When we got there we were told by the staff that we could not wear double strapped sandals. After a 40 minute discussion the staff were very rude, shouted at us and said get out. We were told the only way we can climb the rock was to pay another €10 each to borrow “suitable shoes”. They had neither of our sizes and so had to wear too small and too big shoes. They called them trekking sandals- essential their reversion of what we were already wearing. There were no signs explaining the rules about footwear/ any regulations online before we went. A tourist trap to make you pay more money. Overall, the staff were very unhelpful and very rude.
Once we got past the staff it was a very enjoyable walk with some stunning views.

Start early to avoid the heat and crowds. Also carry water because there are no refreshment stands or water fountains on the hill.
We had some difficulty finding the ticket office because we followed the sign pointing up the steps from Piazza Garibaldi and the way was not marked.
The path inside the park is a combination of stone stairs, stone walkways, and gravel, so wear shoes with good support. The steepest parts do have handrails.
“The Rock” has been inhabited since the 16th- 15th Centuries, BC! And every culture that has had a presence in Sicily has enhanced or altered its structures, but it has always been a stronghold. On the way up you will pass several structures that were part of the Medieval Defense Plan, and they were built on much older structures.
“The Rock” is 270 meters – about 885 feet – high. Piazza Garibaldi is about 50 feet above sea level, so you are in for a workout, but the views are worth it.

A very rewarding panoramic view from high above the town. It’s quite a hike on uneven and slippery surfaces. Take water and allow 2hrs minimum to visit.
Buying tickets is expensive and inefficient and the only thing you’ll find up there in the way of services are waste bins.

Beautiful place to visit at least once in a lifetime. Going up the mountain you can admire the beautiful Cefalù a ruined castle, the temple and more. The climb takes about 1 hour. The downside is that the management is bad. It is not possible to pay admission by card but only cash because the ticket machines have not always worked.

The short hike up the Rocca took us 90 minutes at a leisurely pace. Good shoes or sneakers with good grip are recommended. Today we had beautiful weather with 25 degrees, which was very pleasant for the climb. The view of Cefalu is great and worth it. There is a metal or wooden railing on one side almost halfway along the path and the stone path is about 1.5 meters wide. Easy to walk on. In the upper half, the path consists of earth and solid, larger stones as well as smaller loose stones. But it is also easy to walk on when descending. You should have good footing. Since the path was always wide enough, I never had an oppressive, strange feeling despite my fear of heights. In hotter temperatures, take enough water with you or buy it in a local restaurant where there is a toilet. The stone path in the lower part can be slippery in damp, rainy weather.

An amazing walk! Went up in July, so it was PRETTY HOT. Take lots of water and sunscreen! The views were AMAZING and the amount of history was wonderful! Super accessible from town. Go up early in the morning, take snacks, and enjoy seeing different periods of history!
