Unique medieval pathway around the city walls that has been covered over to create a series of long tunnels.
Jun 2019
This largely covered pedestrian pathway forms a semi-circular route that joins the main street, Via Ferrucchio, at either end of that street's pedestrian only section. The pathway is relatively flat, only rising slightly at each end, and is approximately 200-300 metres long.

The pathway was originally uncovered and ran alongside the eastern side of the city walls. I understand that as security concerns regarding invasions of the city subsided people began to build new, and expand existing, buildings out to meet the city walls thereby covering over the pathway and creating a series of tunnels. Several of the buildings that front the main Via Ferruccio also back onto the Via delle Volte including a very good Enoteca that also sells olive wood products. On the other side of the pathway are openings, some covered with glass, that offer some very good views down the hill over the vineyards.

There are several other shops, wine cellars and galleries along the tunnel route and we particularly like the photography shop which has a great display of photos of the Tuscan landscape.

When we have people stay with us we always take them to Castellina in Chianti as it is so pretty and show them the Via delle Volte as it is so unusual

Part of your walk around the city, with shopping in the old passageways.

Via delle Volte is part of your walk around the city, with shopping in the old passageways. I found the best olive wood cutting boards in my 37 years of buying them in Italy on this little street.

A piece of middle age history

Walk in the hidden alleys of a small medieval town of the Chianti Classico. The ancient building of the Municipality now houses some Etruscan artifacts discovered in the area surrounding the city.

Interesting passageway

This is a medieval passageway with access from the main throughfare in Castellina. It contains houses, a restaurant and several shops. It is very cool here and a welcome relief from the hot sun. There are windows along this route allowing you views across the valleys. It is accessible for wheelchairs and child buggies

This is a really cool tunnel to walk through while visiting Castellina. Not only is there great history, but it's a beautiful stone tunnel with views and shops and cool air!

Architectural history not much else

The underground historical road is pretty unique, stroll along it to appreciate the medieval construction techniques, but don't expect much else. When we were there in April the tunnel was extremely quiet, only 3 premises were open; a bag shop, a wine shop and a restaurant.

Great stop on a tour of small towns
Jun 2018
The walk through Via delle Volte was the most unique stroll in the countryside. The feeling of history was so strong and the views through the city walls were incredible. The little ships built into the wall were sweet and while we didn’t have a chance to stop, the restaurant at the western end of the wall was making something that smelled so incredibly good!
Castellina was a lovely stop for our day. We were there an hour and a half or so, had a pizza and wine snack and went on our way. Parking was easy, there are lots, but we found a spot on the street easily. It wasn’t crowded at all considering it was late May and a beautiful day. We would absolutely stop in again.

the underground historical road is unique, it runs under the old buildings of the village and you can cross it one side to the other like in the middle age!
