In ancient times it was called Piazza Grande, or Piazza Vecchia, then in the 16th century, after the construction of the Palazzo della Loggia, it took its name. On 28 May 1974, while an anti-fascist demonstration of trade unions and workers was underway, a bomb exploded that killed eight people and wounded a hundred. This year marks the 50th anniversary of that neo-fascist terrorist attack with collaborations from members of the Italian state. A must for those visiting Brescia.

I had been there many times but never during the Christmas period.
A show!!!
Lots of elegant lights all around.
The packed rooms make the atmosphere even more pleasant.
Really beautiful, congratulations to the authors

Since the end of 15th century when was built the Loggia under the Republic of Venice , this is the center of the city, many beautiful palaces and monument faces the square, the Loggia dominates it but look around and you will see the clock tower with marvelous sundial gilded and the two automatic bronze statues called the Macc de le uer that ring the bell every hour. Then the monument , called Bella Italia , for the patriots who dead during the ten days of Brescia, just in front this statue you can see the door of Salarolo with beautiful marble decoration, in the same side , towards the Loggia there’s the palace Monti di Pietà with a very nice loggia decorated with Roman elements.

You enter this square through an archway. Look up at the beautiful 16th century clock tower. Look around, and you will see the real Italy of 15th and 16th century buildings. Brescia is not overrun by tourists, not in October at any rate. Go inside the Palace of the Loggia, now the town hall, started in 1493, and look at the murals - it doesn't cost anything, but you will have to surrender your passport for security reasons. Feeling weary? Sit under the enclosed veranda of the restaurant in the opposite corner of the square and have an aperitif, olives and biscuits for 3.50 Euros, and look around you again.

Great place and beautiful architecture! The clock and the City hall palace impressed me the most (when you enter there you have to give your passport or id card to the policewoman).

It's fair to say that Brescia is not high on the list of places to see for visitors to Italy, and perhaps that is as it should be, but if you are ever tired of the tourist crush and wish to see the way traditional Italian city dwellers spend their time then this is perhaps close to a perfect fit. Piazza Loggia, elegant centrepiece to this medium-sized city, is a great place to start, To the east lies the old town, with its two cathedrals, remains of Roman Brixia and fabulous Civic museum (Santa Giulia), to the south is plentiful shopping, while to the north and west is the slightly run-down, colourful, multi-ethnic and slightly dodgy Carmine, full of great places to eat and drink. Well worth a day or two of your holiday to explore, and you may be the only tourists you meet (for now....)

Central Brescia has 3 piazze - Duomo. Loggia and Vittoria. They date, respectively, to the medieval era, the Renaissance and the Fascist era. Piazza Loggia is, without doubt, my favourite. I have lived in Brescia for almost 15 years and never tire of this piazza. Highlights are: the Loggia (construction commenced in 1492), the astronomical clock (16th century) and the incorporation of Roman epigraphy into the walls of the building on the south side of the piazza. This latter was a deliberate choice, seeking to link the 15th/16th century city to its Roman past. In fact, the western wall of Roman Brixia is marked by the line of shops along its eastern edge. For British visitors, do look for the epigraphy referring to the XX Legion - this legion participated in the Claudian invasion of 43 CE and spent 300+ years in the British Isles - they even helped build Hadrian's Wall! Their main base was Deva - today's Chester - and, in the Chester museum, one can see the tombstones of Roman soldiers born and raised in Brescia! The city archaeologist does not know of a particular link between the XX and Roman Brescia but the data both here and in Chester strongly suggest that there was one!

To me, the most beautiful of the central piazze of Brescia. On the west, south and east sides are wonderful Renaissance (later 15th to 16th century) buildings. The buildings on the north side are of more recent (and uncertain date).
At the west end is the Loggia - construction began in 1492 and was finished (thanks to wars etc) more than half a century later. Despite the input of multiple architects it has, to me, a wonderfully unified aspect.
At the east end is the colonnade with the astronomical clock - mid 16th century. The clock is interesting evidence of the two distinct ways of writing numbers in Latin - Ancient and later - VIIII vs IX...
On the south side is (or so it is claimed) the earliest open-air epigraphic museum in Europe, dating to 1485 or so, For Brits like me, it is interesting that one of the pieces of stonework references Legion XX, which spent close to 300 years based in the UK, often in Chester, Indeed, in Chester there are several tombstones of Roman soldiers of that legion that attest to their origins in Brescia...
A beautiful square - but avoid Saturday mornings if you want to appreciate the architecture as there is a market...

The square is a very beautiful one and for italians it is also the place of a terrible bomb attack with several people dead in the '70ies.
