Santis last September in the rain, managed four "peaks" (Alp Bommen, Ebenalp, Ohrli, and of course the big one Santis).

Started late, very late, didn't arrive at Wasserauen until 12.00, which was a bit mad, and despite meeting many on the long route who told me to turn around........I eventually got the peak of Santis late in the evening, around 7, in the rain and the cold, but another canton peak gone off the list.
Actually counts as two canton peaks as Santis at 2,502 m is the top of both Appenzell Ausserrhoden and Appenzell Innerrhoden.

I managed to find a guesthouse on my way down, and got the cable down and returned to Basel in the morning after, tired but happy with my achievement.

Would not say it was enjoyable and it was a pretty a hard trek, but some of the views were stunning. Also seen the famous guesthouse at side of mountain, Church in mountain, the caves and all the rest.

I will try to do the route again sometime in the future, earlier and on a dryer day, as its a great trek with stunning views.

From the Schwägalp train station you can take the Postbus to the valley station of the Säntis cable car. The valley station is well maintained and equipped with a hotel, restaurants and shops. The mountain station also has restaurants and shops and there are exhibitions about the origins of the Säntis Massif. Moreover, you have beautiful views from the top.

What a wonderful mountain!
Free parking and a short ride with the cable car to a stunning view from lake Constance to the Lake of Zürich. Not forgetting the surrounding mountains and valleys.
We had lunch in the restaurant and it was absolutely fabulous.
Obviously we had the Rösti with Appenzeller cheese.
We would come again.

We came in a summer day and the weather conditions up in the mountain were horrible and still no staff told us about them, they sold the ticket to everyone still knowing that none of us would get the experience we paid for. When we talked to the staff afterwords they justified that it was not mandatory for them to tell us the weather conditions and that we still had access to a exibition at the top. Not at all what we paid to see.

The Saentis, in the Alpstein group (Appenzell), can be reached on foot from the valley floor, but also by cable car from Swaegalp. You get to 2502 m high and in fine weather the view is spectacular. I walked the equipped path that follows the Lisengrat ridge and reached the 2120 m of the Rotsteinpass where there is a nice refuge. Along the way I saw ibex and, being July, a beautiful bloom. Pleasant stop at the refuge. Return following the same route, but if you want you can also walk down the valley floor. You need a safe step and, even if there is a fixed rope and several steps, no dizziness. You go with boots and not jogging shoes.

The weather forecast promised fantastic winter weather above the high fog. Unfortunately, the situation on the Säntis summit turned out to be far less perfect. The weather and panorama were undoubtedly breathtaking, no ifs and buts. What was particularly disturbing, however, was the poor condition of the viewing platforms. Several viewing platforms were closed. The accessible paths, stairs and areas were all thickly iced over. There was a little grit here and there, but this quickly melted into the layer of ice when the sun shone. At least the stairs had to be free of ice; it is not enough to offer ice claws for shoes in the shop a few floors below and still do good business with them.

The Säntis ride is very expensive, hardly any places to sit and rest!! Apart from the mountain restaurant!! You have to be able to afford it!!! Some Germans can't do it anymore!!!! Depends on good visibility! We had fog! So, dear Swiss, reduce the price, you get the VAT back from the Germans too!!!!

I came alone to explore the base station Schwägalp and the Säntis mountain which is very impressive.

Definitely a must see if you are in the region.

Plenty of explanations and a great exhibition about the weather on top of the mountain.

Just came back from a hike up the Saentis via Ebenalp, Schaefler and Oehrli. Took the train from Appenzell to Wasserauen, then the cable car to Ebenalp (tip - if you stay 3 nights you usually get a free attractions card with free cable car rides, train & bus rides and much more). From Ebenalp we hiked to Schaefler - this was a bit hard going since the way is narrow and there were many older and inexperienced hikers who were not only slow, but most were also not willing to let us by. A lot of these folks also use the telescopic hiking poles that drive me nits. They are unsuited for alpine terrain, make things more dangerous for their users and ensure (since they are always place diagonally from their wearer) that there is no way you can get by.
Anyway, beyond Schaefler things got much quieter but more difficult. You MUST have good hiking shoes with good soles and be in reasonably good shape. It is also necessary to be free of vertigo, since some spots along the trail are right at the edge of the cliffs. The most difficult spots have cable ropes to use as a handhold, but there are still other spots where you have to climb over rocks, walk over loose gravel and over packed snow (even in late summer). You can ask at one of the alms (Schaefler?) for a safety rope. I believe this is a harness with two clips so you can clip in at the cable ropes (and use two clips - one before each post and one after, etc.). On the other hand, if you need a harness and ropes for this hike it may be better to take the cable car from Schwaengeralm or to choose a mountain that is not as demanding. The most difficult piece comes at the end, just before the summit. You have to climb up through some rocks and then a very steep area where there is a cable rope and iron or rock steps - not for the faint hearted! Although the route is at times strenuous (e.g., going steeply uphill over gravel fields), it is a gorgeous hike where every few feet you get to see new vistas of the four countries (Switzerland, Italy, Germany & Austria). We took a huge amount of pictures of the mountains and vistas as well as the many flowers. We even saw some 'Steinbock' (mountain goats), which were extinct in this area until the 1950s (I believe). The hike from Ebenalp took us about six hours with two longer breaks. We did not rush, otherwise the hike might have been closer to five hours. We did not want to hike down, so we took the cable car from Saentis to Schwaegalp (at $34 per person for a one way fare). We also managed to miss the last bus to Umaesch (the time table had a bus at 6:22PM listed but I did not notice that it only runs on Weekends. So we ended up begging someone at the parking lot for a ride. In usual nice Swiss fashion the lady agreed to take us to Umaesch.

The Säntis offers one of the most fantastic hikes in Switzerland, it is not a long one, around three to three and a half hours but it is steep in some locations and can get particularly tricky in snowy conditions. Alternately of course there is the cable car to go up and down the summit.
Once on the top several beautiful panoramic restaurants await with all the mountain top Swiss specialties, including lovely platters of cold cuts and Appenzeller butter and cheese. There is also a lovely cheese manufactury and shop at the bottom station of the cable car which is definitely worth stopping by for some tasty souvenirs.
