About
PLEASE CONTACT US TO ARRANGE A TIME FOR YOUR VISIT AS THIS IS A PRIVATE GARDEN. Nestled in grape country, hidden behind high hedges, lies the private but nationally acclaimed garden of Upton Oaks. Surrounding the 1911 Victorian homestead are gardens that have been recognised as a 'Garden of National Significance' as awarded by the NZ Gardens Trust. The colourful gardens comprise of intimate garden rooms contained within a formal framework of hedges and brick walls. The much photographed 17th century style Knot Garden is a favourite for visitors. Relax on a park bench where you can take in views of the herbaceous borders and pond. A small rustic olive grove with a winding path, leads to large raised vegetable beds and espaliered fruit trees. The blue and white gardens surrounding a French iron gazebo compliment our historic guest house, Laurella cottage at the rear of the property which is available to book for accommdation. Upton Oaks Garden has graced the pages of numerous magazines plus television screens and is visited by many national and international groups each year.

Upton Oaks Garden is nestled in grape region which is hidden behind high hedges. It is a large romantic garden which has been created to harmonise with style.

Garden and cottage gem
Oct 2020 • Couples
We stayed two nights at beautiful Laurella Cottage. On arrival we were taken with the spice and raspberry biscuits and this was only the start. Everything provided is indicative of Sue and David’s attention to detail in this little cottage and is a sheer delight to experience. We truly appreciated the romantic ambience and the beautiful garden setting. Highly recommended!

A lovely garden with a lovely hostess
Mar 2019 • Friends
My friend and I visited this garden and although the first touches of autumn were showing the garden layout was really beautiful. We loved the peacefulness of the garden and the many fruit trees, vegetables, olive trees etc which made the garden even more interesting. The owner was also very nice to talk to, giving us a lot of information about the garden and her AirBnB cottage. The cottage and surrounds are separate from the garden and offer a peaceful, pretty and upmarket hideaway.

A Visual Delight
Nov 2018
This garden & home is a hidden gem. Beautiful well tended gardens with a suprise behind each wall & hedge. We saw roses, peonies, lupins & a mass of colour wherever you looked. Perfect hedges & espellierd fruit treees set surrounding a vintage villa & cutest cottage to rent. Just when you think you are at an end there is a woodland meadow surrounding olive trees. Don’t miss this fabulous spot.

Beautiful gardens reminding me of English gardens and tea served.

This is an old Victorian house with proper gardens. I believe two small cottages can be rented for overnight stays. Flowers mingled with fruits and vegetables made for great hourly self tour. It is a nice break and an easy drive from Picton. I had it as part of. Tour thru Holland America. I highly recommend it. Tea and a treat were served by the owner. The house was not open to tours but very picturesque

AN AMAZING AMOUNT OF WORK
Feb 2018 • Couples
This small, maybe a little more than an acre, is absolutely stunning. The amount of work and time to create this beauty is extraordinary in scope. The garden is diveded in small parts, different flowers, veggies, pool area. So well manicured. While not a garden person per se I was amazed at this and the idea that it was created by two people. They also thoughtfully provided tea, coffee and juice. We were on a tour so I do not know about just being able to drop in but I would make arrangements if you thought you might be in the area. It is a true work of love.

Stunning!
Jan 2018 • Couples
This is a garden at a private home and it is shown by appointment only. Driftwood Tours made the arrangement for our group of 6 to tour. It was a highlight of our trip to New Zealand. Sue showed us her passion of 30 years - to create a beautiful formal gardens around her home and office, she succeeded!

A spectacular garden in Blenheim
Mar 2017 • Couples
I emailed Sue to arrange a time to see her magnificent garden and she was extremely responsive - so glad we took the time to contact her as the garden is just so special. The creativity and the variation in all the different sections of the garden was just so wonderful to see - this was the type of garden you see in magazines, an absolute feast for the eyes. The apple trees were laden with fruit and the walnut tree was popping nuts as we stood beneath - so great! Oh, I should mention the spectacular hedges, sculptures in their own right. Coming from Brisbane, Australia we don't see this type of garden and to think that a lovely couple have achieved all this through their own hard work and creativity over almost 30 years, we felt privileged to be able to experience it. A must do for any lover of pretty things.
