The historic centre of Durham is built on a deep bend, essentially an oxbow, of the River Wear and there are foot and bicycle paths along both sides of the river all the way through the city from out in the countryside either direction. There are woods along these and they connect to other paths at various locations. We used these at times when walking to our daughter's college at the university or just going through the city. We also ate lunch in the village of Shincliffe one day and then walked back to connect to the trails, walking all the way back into the city centre. It was very nice and pleasant, and this is a wonderful asset that really adds to the peaceful character, charm, and scenery of Durham.

Durham riverside walks are beautiful. The city is beautiful and some of the better views are to be had from the riverside. It needs investment though to tidy it up and measures introduced to help make the lone wanderer safe. I didn't feel unsafe but can imagine some would. The boat clubs also need to smarten up their boathouses with signage and a lick of paint.

Because Durham Castle was closed my partner and I decided to take the riverside walk which was lovely. We walked a fair length along the designated pathway and over the bridge which brings you out alongside the passport office. There is a lovely sculpture of a heron overlooking the weir. Most of the cafes, bars and eating establishments were open. Would visit again sometime in the not too distant future when hopefully the castle will be open.

One couldn’t find a more picturesque setting for a walk. Looking up at the Cathedral and Castle is truly inspiring. The wooded banks are full of wild flowers whatever the season and it’s a delightful place to walk at any time of the yea

This is a lovely walk along the riverside with lots of greenery to admire and some quite interesting old buildings.
There had been quite a bit of rain so the path was quite muddy in places so proper shoes would be necessary.
A very popular place for young and old alike.

Great walk by the river. Really felt like you were out in the countryside rather than in the middle of a city.
Does need some work on it though as there was lots of knotweed and Japanese balsam growing and becoming very invasive in parts. If some of the trees and bushes were cut back there could be lots of sitt8ng areas along the riverside

The actual city centre with the historic areas is quite small. Magnificent cathedral and wonderful castle can easily be done in a morning or afternoon. If you include the Riverside walks and a coffee stop add a couple of hours perhaps.

Lovely scenic walk along the Riverside on a gorgeously sunny day. So close to the shops and market square area which were really busy (to be expected as it is a Bank Holiday weekend) but felt a million miles away in terms of peace and tranquility. A relatively easy walk due to it being flat with a few inclines in places. Absolutely stunning views of the cathedral.

A pleasant walk along the river at Durham. You would never guess how close to the city you truly were. Stunning views of the Cathedral abound. Not particularly strenuous, a few uphill sections but generally flat and even.

What a fabulous walk along the river at Durham . You would never know how close to the city you were . Stunning views of the Cathedral . Mainly flat with inclines now and then . Plenty seats to rest and take in the views . Recommend to anyone . You can cross from one side to the other over historical bridges . Fantastic .

Is there wheelchair access to the riverside from the Riverside Centre, ie: lift, ramp?
Written 13 February 2023
Hi. We are coming to visit Durham and would like to do the Riverside walk, Can anyone give me addresses of car parks please?
Written 12 August 2020
Hi,
If you’re staying in Durham itself in a hotel and have hotel car parking then you can start and finish at the hotel as the river wraps round Durham. If you’re staying in Durham and there’s no parking then the Park and Ride is probably the cheapest option. City centre the Walkergate car park has overnight parking if needed and is the best value I think.

We were there in February, so didn't think much about picnics, but I doubt if it is the best place for them.....

Which is the nicest , I want to walk for about 2 hours there and back to city centre
Written 5 February 2017
We only walked about 30 minutes on one side and back on the other so an hour altogether at a leisurely pace starting from west of the castle near silver st bridge.
