Worth a visit
Sep 2021 • Couples
Well worth a visit to this castle built in 1830 as an engineering experiment. Great exhibition detailing the history of Bude & the surrounding area. Cafe, gallery & loos onsite. Free admission. Perfect for a day when the weather is grey & wet.

We came across this place by chance and it was a great find. The grounds are lovely and the kids loved it, especially the hills to roll down where the views were also fantastic. The museum itself was really interesting and also free, which was a surprise. Would definitely recommend.

7 foot dude

Good little museum and shop to nose around. Enjoyed reading about local history and geography. Kids enjoyed measuring themselves against the 7 ft dude from the English civil war (fascinating story). Also enjoyed rolling down the various hills outside. Yes they started a trend !

Great free place to kill an hour, more if you visit the cafe too. Some interesting exhibitions, kept our children (3 & 7) entertained enough. Nice little walk around the grounds. Cafe lovely, not a huge menu, but all done well and very tasty. Good value too.

Not great… but it’s free!!!

Can only echo the comments on here, it does feel like you’re walking round someone’s house with some posters on the wall.

The building is very sterile and lacks any historic-feel to it. Some of the exhibits are interesting but only took us about 15 minutes to walk through

However, it was free…

Sitting on the lawns and listening to the Bude brass band was pleasant!

Regular visitors on our holiday

A great location and kept grounds means you keep coming back here for a walk around the castle, the cafe and the grounds + the views over the canal and sea just finish it off.
The cafe is great for lunch or snacks. Takeaway available and they do a good picnic box for eating in the grounds around the bandstand. A must if there is a performance on at the bandstand.
Always kept clean and pleasant for the regular cycle of visitors.
