About
We are the SJT. Scarborough’s independent theatre and cinema. Our home is a beautifully restored 1930s Odeon cinema, home to our famous theatre-in-the-round which was the first of its kind in the world. The Round provides a truly unique experience as the audience is seated all around the stage. Come and join us for a night at the theatre (or cinema) soon!

- Barnsley Bill27 contributionsExcellent theatre experience, a must for anyone visiting ScarboroughWonderful night watching a performance of Northanger Abbey in the Theatre in the Round . A compelling performance by a brilliant cast playing multiple characters ! Plus the added bonus of having our interval drinks brought to our seats.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 April 2024

- Eddie B255 contributionsSuperb productionJust returned from seeing “Brassed Off” at the SJT. What a triumph, from the booking process right to the end of the show . The staff are courteous and very friendly, the theatre is a gem and so atmospheric. A superb adaptation of the original film with a few extra bits. The cast are both adept at acting and performing as a band . Highly recommend this production and a visit to the SJT. - Barnsley Bill27 contributionsGreat entertainment in a wonderful atmosphereWe have just been to see Brassed Off in the theatre in the round. What an awesome experience! Superbly acted and wonderful music actually played by the cast, unlike in the film. The theatre itself is beautiful and worth visiting as there is a cafe and bar.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 August 2024

We are fans of Allen Ayckbourn’s plays and looked forward to seeing his latest play Family Album at Scarborough during a round UK theatre trip from our home in France . Unfortunately the SJT or someone responsible thinks it unnecessary to mic up the actors . Clearly they have good hearing but many of us haven’t even with the latest hearing aids so this wonderful play was 60% lost for my wife. We will not return .
SJT you need to rethink this stupid decision.

This was our first visit to the theatre, having bought a hotel in Scarborough and moved here last week. What an amazingly friendly greeting and all staff were so welcoming.
Socials distancing and Covid measures were all spot on yet delivered effortlessly. The new play “Sunny Side Up” was brilliant, very well produced and so funny.
We have joined as members and already have tickets for a further 4 events.

It is a travesty that the theatre is SO far down the list of things to do in Scarborough
There is a super cafe / restaurant that can be visited without the need to be going to a show. The cafe is run by enthusiastic friendly staff and the food was superb
The theatre is ‘in the round’ so no restricted seats and the show was excellent
Will definitely go back

New to the area and first time at the theatre in Scarborough. Booked to see Family Album, something quite different for us to see a play yet very well acted and thoroughly enjoyed the evening.
This theatre is quite lovely, really like the Art Deco features that have been kept. Staff were very friendly and welcoming. The square theatre was a very interesting concept and we were not sure how it would work yet it was great - seating works very well well and we had good views and the sound was excellent. See you again soon.

Tonight was the opening night - an evening of song and dance telling the story of a day in World War II.
A fun night with a great script, good voices, ending with a standing ovation!
We weren’t the only ones shouting for more, the whole place erupted!

Do not book seats in the back row.
The seats have no arms, the back rest is upright and there is a bar spoiling the view of the stage, giving a very restricted view.
These are the most uncomfortable seats we have ever sat in, in any theatre ( and we have been to many throughout the UK).
The play itself was probably excellent, but spoilt by the seats we had. Not knowing this theatre previously we had no idea of which seats to choose. We made a bad choice!
In our opinion, these seats should be removed and the area turned into a standing area and sold for £5.
Alternatively the theatre should make patrons aware before booking of the problems with these seats. If they had done so, we would definitely not have booked them.
Whoever the theatre designer was, should be made to sit in these sea5s for two and a half hours. We are sure that there would be some alterations made!
On a positive note - nice ice cream.

Hi Michael, I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience sitting on our back row. As we discussed over email we'll be adding a flag on our Box Office system so it's clear the seats on the backrow are different to the seats elsewhere in the auditorium. If anyone reading this review is worried about booking seats on our back row you can find more information here: https://sjt.uk.com/your-visit/accessibility

I have listened to "Anno Domino'" every night since it was streamed online. I may have fallen asleep listening but it has been alot of comfort at the end of sometimes a stressful day, in "lock down" (my elderly mother has Alzheimers). I will miss you when you are gone - had a most relaxing end of day experience listening. Thank you. Xxx

Our first visit to the SJT.
Worth the wait, we went to see The 39 Steps.
From the moment we walked into the theatre we were made to feel welcome. The staff were helpful and personable.
The cast were excellent, as was the music. It was absolutely hysterical.
The cast must be exhausted by the end of the show with the energy and enthusiasm they use and portray
The innovative use of props and changing of scenery so well thought out and smooth.
The fact it is performed in the round ensures the audience felt part of the performance and valued
A thoroughly enjoyable and memorable evenings entertainment

On Friday evening you can see Taking Steps or Goth Weekend.
On Saturday afternoon and evening is A brief history of women.
I have seen all three plays and found them all to be highly entertaining.

Is there already any schedule for 2018? Are there any major breaks between June and September 2018 I should be aware of as I am planning now my next summer holidays? Thank you

Hello! Unfortunately we do not have a confirmed schedule for next summer yet. Usually, the only major breaks are when we have a 'tech' week', i.e. we're getting ready to open a new show.
We would recommend you join our mailing list so that you will find out the details of the summer season as soon as possible.
To do this, just go to our website click on Get In Touch and scroll down (sorry, TripAdvisor won't let us post a link!)

Yes, although there is usually a 'dark' period of a week or two for building maintenance. Call the Box Office or check what's on via the website.
