About
We're back, with cinema screenings and the wonderful Eat Me Cafe operating from our first floor space! The home of truly great theatre. Let us transport you to new worlds and enjoy new experiences through the magic of theatre – no trip to Scarborough would be complete without it! We offer a unique, intimate experience in our renowned theatre-in-the-round as well as the more traditional end-on McCarthy theatre and cinema. The SJT has been and is known for its commitment to new writing throughout its 61 years not to mention Alan Ayckbourn’s 80 World Premieres. It is home to excellent drama, music, films, comedy and live streaming and has been the starting point for many, now familiar names.

Great to be back
Jun 2021
Wonderful to be back to see The Girl Next Door - excellent performance and good fun. Very well looked after amidst the Covid constraints. Quite a novelty to have our interval drinks brought to our seats.

Enjoyable play at an excellent theatre
Jun 2021
I've been to the Stephen Joseph Theatre many times over the years and always enjoy going to seen the latest Alan Ackbourne play whenever I holiday in Scarborough.
I was delighted to see that the theatre had re-opened after Covid restrictions. The play itself was very enjoyable, the actors played their parts very well and as ever, watching the technicians change the sets during the show was one of the highlights! I was pleased to see that the mitigations they'd put in re C-19 were relatively unobtrusive, and a the same time adequate. Gaps were left to each side and in front and behind of each area of seating used, and masks had to be worn unless eating or drinking. I'd ordered my drinks in advance online, but I saw that you could also order at a hatch before the performance. During the interval, drinks were brought to each person's seat. Announcements were made regarding which rows should leave by which door and patrons for the most part followed the instructions.
I look forward to my next visit to the SJT, hopefully without restrictions, so that I can enjoy a packed and atmospheric bar at the interval and see all the rows of seats completely filled.

It is a travesty that the theatre is SO far down the list of things to do in Scarborough

There is a super cafe / restaurant that can be visited without the need to be going to a show. The cafe is run by enthusiastic friendly staff and the food was superb

The theatre is ‘in the round’ so no restricted seats and the show was excellent

Will definitely go back

Fabulous restored 1950s building with celebrated theatre-in-the-round
Jun 2021
An unmissable treat in Scarborough. The SJT is a beautifully-restored 1950s Odeon - all white tiles and artistic neon outside, comfortable in - that houses the famous theatre-in-the-round. Alan Ayckbourn addicts will know the theatre well, but note that the theatre hosts many plays, films and art events, Highly recommended.

Fantastic piece of work available to rent in your living room - bringing the arts to life during coronavirus restriction
Jan 2021
We rented the Snow Queen from the theatre, which was filmed with a small audience when social distancing and masks still permitted a few visitors in the audience.

My children aged 3 and 6 were gripped! Having been to a few of the theatres live productions in the past, they were disappointed that we were unable to make the journey back from Switzerland to Scarborough this year to be with family, and the visit to the theatre being impossible was almost a tragedy for them. This rentals opportunity really made their day! A theatre experience in our living room, with popcorn interval too - but I had to pour my own glass of wine sadly 😂

The performance was incredible - one actor giving it her all. The enthusiasm, the switch between characters, so much energy - she never faltered. The music and lighting also brought a perfect atmosphere to the show, and the editing was seamless. A very impressive piece of work by a small town theatre - I strongly recommend this show to anyone with children aged 3 and up.

An amazing venue, so friendly and welcoming and very well socially distanced
Oct 2020 • Couples
This was our first visit to the theatre, having bought a hotel in Scarborough and moved here last week. What an amazingly friendly greeting and all staff were so welcoming.

Socials distancing and Covid measures were all spot on yet delivered effortlessly. The new play “Sunny Side Up” was brilliant, very well produced and so funny.

We have joined as members and already have tickets for a further 4 events.

So glad to be back supporting the SJT
Aug 2020
Have just visited this afternoon to see 42nd Street. I was extremely impressed by the procedures and safety measures put in place to enable people to enjoy what this amazing theatre has to offer once again. The audience numbers were low due to social distancing so I urge others to have the confidence to visit and support the SJT, ensuring they are sold out in what they're offering. The show was a screened performance filmed from a live show on the west end - fantastic!

I have listened to "Anno Domino'" every night since it was streamed online. I may have fallen asleep listening but it has been alot of comfort at the end of sometimes a stressful day, in "lock down" (my elderly mother has Alzheimers). I will miss you when you are gone - had a most relaxing end of day experience listening. Thank you. Xxx
