In the middle of the island, protected by houses and on the island's highest point, you will find the little red stave church, standing as it has stood since appr year 1300. It has ever since been a meeting point in happy times and also in sad times. The altarpiece was donated by the Netherlands princess Elisabeth in gratitude for her rescue at sea by Norwegian sailors during a violent storm in 1515. The wall paintings date back to appr 1620.

Grip is ok. Small but interesting. A 1.5 hr stop is a bit too long, but if you're here you should see the church; one of the oldest in Norway with interesting drawings on the walls.

Since we went here by private boat, we could visit the church without other guests. Impressive history of this small, but very important church.

The island's stave church, restored, dates from the late 15th century. Beautiful to take pictures and very peaceful.

After an hour by boat from Kristiansund harbor, by "Gripruta", we arrived to Grip. Grip is a small old fishing harbor with a famous lighthouse. The church was built about 1400 AC. Inside there is remains of old wallpaintings and a special altarpiece.

Probably the most interesting small island in Norway. No one live there any more, but use the place as week end residences. The church is situated between all the houses vecause they needed to protect it from heavy wather. Accessible by boat fro Kristiansund.

It's amazing where 30 minutes in a boat can take you but Grip Stave Church was amazing especially the inside. Am so thankful that I had the opportunity to visit this so peaceful little island.

This small, medieval, wooden stave church is found on the island of Grip, a half hour's boat trip due west of Kristiansund in Western Norway. It was built on the highest point on the main island, six meters above sea level. It was to be...More
