- NK AnnamáriaOslo, Norway303 contributionsAmazing rideThere is no exaggerating when people say this railway is among the most beautiful in Europe. We were very excited to see the beautiful landscape and could not take enough photos and make enough videos. During the entire trip we wished we could get off at every station and just go for a hike in that beautiful region and stay for a week admiring the peaceful landscapes. Our train departed 40 minutes after the scheduled time from Bergen (I read this happens all the time) but afterwards we did not have any more problems on the road. We booked seats in the family car but I have to say that, our youngest being 6 years old, we kind of outgrew this space and the advantages we got were small compared to having to listen to babies crying all the way. If you travel with kids below 5 who cannot sit for hours, then it is still a good idea to chose the section reserved for families. The food on the train is quite tasty but it cost more if you want to eat it in the restaurant versus if you take the food with you to your seat. As most people do the latter, there is always a table available at the restaurant. We took advantage of this and had a peaceful hour with our lunch. This is an amazing ride, I do recommend to try it, even though the plane is many times faster, the view is worth spending your day on a train.Visited July 2021Written 22 July 2021
- Andrew JGuildford, United Kingdom51 contributionsProbably best not to do the trip in winter... But...In hindsight, this might have been a trip better done in the Spring or Summer, mainly because when there has been a lot of snow everything is white. Where there would be glistening blue lakes and green landscape, there is no delineation since the lakes are frozen and covered in snow, as is the land. Having said that, still a great experience with some friendly co-travellers and comfortable seating in Komfort class with free tea and coffee. Note that in 2020 all Komfort class carriages are being replaced with a new Pluss carriage which has upgraded facilities and at-seat power. I might just have to go back in the Summer!Visited March 2020Travelled soloWritten 9 March 2020
- PippyJCheadle, United Kingdom29 contributionsGreat way to see Norways beautiful scenerySpectacular views of fjords and mountains as you travel between Bergen and Oslo. Trip takes 6 hrs but seats are comfortable on modern trains. We paid for upgrade to Plus (relatively small cost) - allows swap of seats to get best views plus comfy seats and free coffee / hot drinks. Book does text with VY.no .. don’t go through booking agents - seats released approx 1 month in advance of travel but can buy on day (for more ££) Watch as the scenery changes as you travel through Norway ..Visited September 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 September 2022

The Bergen Railway line is worth taking for the amazing scenery alone. As we left Oslo, we were eventually treated with beautiful views of lakes, rivers and meadows. We then started to see snow in mid June as we climbed the mountains. We were also very excited when the conductor allowed those that wanted to get off in the village of Finse, the railway’s highest elevation. Even though we only had five minutes, we took pictures and threw a snowball. After five hours we disembarked in Myrdal for the Flam Railway. Our reserved round trip tickets were part of a Norway in a Nutshell touring package. The first ride was on a 5:30am train and it was an amazing experience. Then after spending several days exploring western Norway, we took the reverse trip on the evening train back to Oslo, arriving at 10:30pm. I would suggest bringing food onto the train since the cafe car has limited offerings. Unfortunately the cafe car is where we also experienced rude staff. The train was clean and we appreciated the reclining seats. Their plus seating is also available to reserve which would be good for families with small children but it didn’t look like the seating would adjust. The train has space for overhead carryons and luggage storage areas but they fill up fast. Traveling light will make it easier to maneuver on and off the train. I would definitely recommend the Bergen Railway to view the beauty of Norway!

Book in advance to reserve your seats and be able to sit next to each other. The journey is beautiful and well wortt it. We had tickets for the plus service, I am not sure its worth it though. You get coffee and tea, but seats are very basic.
In spite of the long journey, over 7 hours from oslo to Bergen, time goes by very quickly while you enjoy the beauty of nature.

Stunning scenery, Bergen to Oslo, better than Flam railway. The final section was by bus, no reason given although it was well organised.
Staff on the sleeper from Oslo to Bergen rude and unhelpful. If you have reserved a sleeping compartment you need to go to carriage 5 to be assigned it. However, no-one tells you that, so it's quite stressful. Sleeping compartments cramped but clean with comfortable berths. On arrival in Bergen staff were locking the doors before all the passengers had got off.

We rode the Bergen Railway from Oslo to Myrdal in early June 2023. We had reserved seats and there was no issue with that. The train was clean, fast and a smooth ride. Everything everywhere was green, green, green and lots and lots of trees and many lakes and rivers. Some places the lakes surfaces were like glass because there’s no wind at all. As we worked our way north and west into the heart of Norway it went from flat and industrial to agricultural to wilderness to mountains to frozen lakes and a foot of snow on the ground. We saw dozens of rivers, lakes, waterfalls, creeks, rapids. This was an excellent train ride.

My recommendation is not to use VY trains!!! Never!!!
I bought a ticket for Oslo-Bergen train. It was canceled in less than 30 minutes before departure. VY did nothing to fix the situation. They demonstrated total non-professionalism and carelessness.
There were no announcements on the action plan in this situation, just a croud ariound VY representative. They even refused to organize a luggage area for the passengers considering that storage room was fully occupied.
They only recommended the passengers to organize the alternative trip by themselves. They promised the full refund of the related costs. However, it was just a word of their representative with no official proof.
That representative recommended to apply for the refund online. According to their own rules, they have 30 days to provide the refunds. However, when I filled the application form for the refund, they replied they will only respond in 20-25 working days. Alternatively, they recommended to use the chatbot o their website, which led me to the same application form. In addition to that, this for does not have any fields to attach the supporting documents for the extra costs related to the train cancellation. These all allow them to use never-ending red tape not to provide the refunds. So, in practice, I will NEVER receive it.
My costs are: around 120 EUR for the cancelled train plus around 245 EUR for the plane and transfers used instead of that train
In addition to that, I have a spoiled vacation and wasted day in Oslo (considering that I had spent a week there before the cancelled train journey).

I took this train from Myrdal after taking the fast ferry from Bergen and staying in the Sognefjorden area for a week. Relaxing way to see the countryside before getting to the big city.

Picked up train from Oslo central station. Advanced on line booking very easy. In first class seats there is also a free coffee station and small lounge area. Seats comfortable with recliner, tables and power points. Around 4.5 hours to Flåm where you can connect to the famous Flam railways. Views on the way from Oslo are stunning from both sides of train. Pretty good buffet car. Overall a great train ride experience.

1. Which direction is more scenic Oslo to Bergen or Bergen to Oslo?
2. Do all seats face forward?
3. Is there a limit size to small carry-on luggage?
We'll be booking for the first week in July 2022.
Thanks,
Leslie and Tom from NYC

We traveled Oslo-Myrdal, visited Flan and then journeyed westward Myrdal to Oslo. Honestly, both were beautiful in their own way. If I HAD to pick just one, I would say that the run to Bergen was prettier as it had more mountains/valleys and fjords in a shorter distance. But you won't suffer from lack of view going to Oslo.
