Late Opening is a GEM. Highly Recommend!
Late opening in this museum is an absolute gem. We went at around 7pm (I think it closed at 9pm?) the place may as well have been deserted. Lots of staff on hand to assist if you needed anything, but felt like we had the place to ourselves. Walked right up to the scream, was about 3 other people in the room. Probably the best museum experience we've had so far, usually in these places the 'spotlight' pieces have a huge crowd of people and you can't actually see them. Can't recommend the late opening enough.

Incredible Museum - Great Artificats - Fine Art - Abundant History of Norway and the World
The National Museum is a HUGE museum with artifacts dating back to BC. Surprisingly detailed with exhibits from every period of history. Extensive exhibits of sculptures, artwork, artifacts, design, technology, and more! The first floor is in chronological order, with some incredible pieces of history. the second- floor features fine art from local artists as well as lots of art from world renowned artists. Here you will find the best copy of the Scream. A bit surprising to find this in the National Museum rather than the Munch Museum (where they house several other versions of the Scream). Room after room after room of fine art is on display. You can easily get lost, so be sure to grab a map to navigate throughout the rooms. The staff is very, very friendly and helpful. Without any prompting, they approached me and offered assistance with finding what I would most enjoy seeing and then personally escorted me to that room. I was really surprised, especially because I was speaking English to another visitor at the museum and an English-speaking staff member offered assistance, again, with no prompting from me. One word of warning, there are yellow "tracks" about 3 feet from the walls in the exhibit rooms and if you accidentally step on or over these tracks, you will set off a silent alarm. While it is rather obvious once you notice the tracks, there are no signs or warnings that you may be setting off the alarms. Of course, I managed to set them off a few times until I was clearly told to stay behind the lines. I actually prefer these tracks on the floor over the usual metal stanchions and ropes, but you just have to remember they are there, or you'll be greeted by security. If you are in Norway and have an opportunity to visit this museum, you must visit to get a feel for local Norway and the influence it has had on the entire world. If you really want to dig into the exhibits, allow more than 3 hours visiting time. Time will fly by, and you'll be glad you took the time to see it all.

    Showcasing Norwegian Artists and More
This museum which only opened recently is quite large so unless you plan to spend the entire day there, it is best to study the brochure you are given and come up with a plan. We had several hours so that was enough to see the entire first floor (which showcases the oldest exhibits) and the highlights of the second floor. The rooms are numbered well so it is easy to keep track of where you are at. Keep in mind that this is the National Museum of Norway so you will find numerous rooms featuring Norwegian artists. Photos are allowed without a flash so that is nice. Free wifi is available, and there is an app that can be downloaded with audio tours, but you will need to bring you own earbuds or headphones if you want to experience them.

Rude and extremely impolite security personnel. Of course you weren’t allowed to cross the line in front of the paintings, but your head couldn’t also cross it in order to read the painting label!!! ! The guard told me to take a picture of it to read it afterwards!! Also, our kid was told off twice for making too much noise playing with the wooden blocks THEY provide in the exhibition museum. Awful experience.

Brilliant museum and gallery with truly wide range of interesting exhibits and pieces.

We particularly enjoyed the gallery dedicated to artists not normally seen in the context of art galleries and national collections and the Norwegian design through the ages was also really interesting

Impressive museum having great variety of artworks and objects presented at exhibitions.
On the three floors are numerous rooms in which can be seen artworks from different periods. The ground floor is dedicated to art and design over the ages. There could be seen objects from Antiquity throughout Middle Ages up to the 21st century. In the rooms are shown not only decorations but also artefacts of daily use and clothing.
The first floor consists of numerous rooms with paintings, sculptures, and installations from different periods. Furthermore, on the second floor are also rooms dedicated to workshops and adults. In several rooms benches that have tasks for children related to artworks presented at the exhibition.
On the second floor are temporary exhibitions (currently Louise Bourgeois’s Imaginary Conversations and Oltre Terra. Why Wool Matters).
There is also a cafe (on the first floor) serving black coffee (it is an option to have it with milk or a vegan drink) and backing goods. Furthermore, it is a restaurant on the ground floor serving a variety of meals.

Oslo museums are stunning, and this is no exception.

Located on the harbourside. Vast building, light and airey. There’s a good floor plan. I found it useful to study it and then head for the areas I was particularly interested in, and then zoom through the rest.

My preference was Floor 2, from Rooms 34+. But I went straight to Room 60 to Edvard Munch Room to see the actual, original ‘The Scream’. It’s not as large as some of his other paintings, about half the size of his ‘Dancers’ one. And around Rooms 59, 60 and 80, there are various versions of his paintings that are also on display in the Munch Museum. But I preferred the displays here as you could sit, look and ponder here.

I enjoyed the Norwegian paintings from 1500s, from Room 34+ onwards. Great pictures of moments of what life must have been like way back then. And pictures from 1700, 1800s depict life in tiny hamlets, folk grazing their animals, or just going about their business. The panorama of huge mountains of trees surrounding their valleys. Tremendous stuff, and loads of seating everywhere to sit and enjoy.

The café is located in the connecting corridor between the 2 buildings, nice views over the harbourside piers. And free water on offer.

There’s the bonkers Modernist stuff too, as bonkers as anything you’d find in Tate Modern, London. I was particularly taken with the installation of frying pans with ceramic eggs gracing a wall. And less so with the installation of man dancing (badly) in his underpants.

There’s some brill women’s costumes from early 1900s. But poorly displayed. 2 rows on top of each other so high up that you couldn’t see the costume detail. And relevant info located right at the bottom in type font so small as to make the info unreadable. It’d be better to hand them over to the Norsk Folke Museum on Bygdoy island who could display them to more effect.

In Rooms 30-33, there are donations of magnificent dresses from the Royal Family.
There was a Norwegian tour guide talking to a group so wasn’t possible to linger. I preferred the numerous costumes that were displayed thereabouts through the museum.

On the Ground floor (Floor 1), there’s mini-glass rooms displaying artefacts from the 20th century.

There is just so much to see, it’s better to plan the things you want to see first. I was in there about 5 hours with a short coffee break. An irritating issue is Curators' lack of common sense in presenting info that is actually readable. And I would definitely re-visit.

I agree with other reviews - the quality of Munch artwork here was far better than at the museum dedicated to Munch. It’s probably better I went here after the Munch museum, otherwise I think I’d have ended up even more disappointed with wall to wall inferior artwork (but that’s for another review).

This is another museum I wanted to give 5 stars, because it had an excellent selection of artwork on display, even if it wasn’t all to my taste. However, why so few toilets? Even the men were queueing. There weren’t enough toilets (I could only find two ladies’ toilets on each floor) and they weren’t spread out enough, located only very centrally in the building, which is disappointing and odd for such a modern museum. (Let’s not forget the size of the cafes - all that coffee and cake needs to be digested and then…… well, you get my point).

On the plus side, I did get to practice my Norwegian with a nearly seven year old girl in the queue. So it wasn’t a TOTAL waste of my time queueing……

I particularly enjoyed all the classical heads on displays. It had a few Greek pots as well, and some nice dresses re the Royal Family. I also had to stop myself from boogeying when A-ha’s Take on Me blasted out from one of the exhibits towards the end.

So basically, something for everyone. It really does cover a lot of different eras and genres and I could have spent far longer than I did here (sore feet let me down). Definitely one to go back to if I’m ever back in Oslo.

I had a great visit to this museum. I spent 2 hours, although if you wanted you could spend twice that. There are over 80 rooms but I concentrated on those most interesting to me.
I was pleased to learn there is a copy of "the scream" here (apparently munch made 5), so I didn't need to make a separate visit to the munch museum.
I recommend bringing your headphones and downloading the audio guide. There are plenty of seats in each room to sit and listen to a short session on the items in the room (2-5 minutes).
There is a free bag check in the basement, and water on floor 2.

I liked the modern building although it contrasted with some older building in the area. Located in a great spot near the Nobel Peace Centre with nearby streets food. Some artefacts from the Viking Ship Museum were re located here as the museum was closed. You need a few hours to absorb the history.

Excellent exhibits in a very beautiful setting. Many of the mid east, Greek and Egyptian items are replicas but that does not detract from the learning experience.

Be sure to set aside 2.5 hours minimum.

Building is so sad. Two lovely old buildings in front whose design could have been reflected in a contemporary way rather than completely rejected by a brutelist gray cube of stone.
Second floor coffee shop looks at the back & side of those buildings rather than the waterfront. Why isn't it at the front of the third floor where you can see a wonderful view? But that space is a closed in box with no windows! Fail for design.
Entry where? A quick glance while going by on Tram 12 suggested maybe the entrance, which it was, but no sign! Another entrance into the Library on side actually went by 3 times, 2 in cabs and 1 in hop on/off but never saw because it's buried, and I was looking as we went around the building! Fail for entrances.
D for signage. (Same problem in Munch.) Get off elevator--where to go? No idea. Where's start of exhibit? No idea. Several times in both museums started in middle, once at end!
Did think exhibition space was fine. Like the split spaces with stairs/elevators in between, but again, where the heck to go when you get off the elevator?!?
Restrooms D. (Unlike Munch--A for restrooms.) Very few and hard to fine.
What else--hate the stone. Back to point one--so wrong!
Saw special exhibit on 3 Louise Bourgeois. Don't care of her art, but good use of space.
Skipped 2.
Really liked parts of 1 arts & crafts--half rooms showing historical setups, but weird side rooms have to go thru then back track to get to room you left.
Overall architecture F. Who the heck let them do that?!?
Munch's exterior may not be as good as it could be, but there are views where they should be, eating spaces are good, lots of rest rooms, and exhibit spaces are good. (Needs better signage, east fix.)
I think that's it.
